Searching for Angelo & Pauline Gardella Rosasco

Post by DeidreMac »

Hello. I am looking for documentation for my Great Grandparents Angelo Rosasco and Pauline Gardella Rosasco. Angelo was born in 1866 (Genoa ?)until he passed in NYC 1948. I cannot locate his birth certificate or Town/Province of Genoa. His parents are listed as Catarina Rosasco 1847, and Giovanni Maria Rech 1842-1873. I cannot find any documentation on either.

Pauline or Paulina Gardella was born 1869 in (Genoa?) and passed in NYC 1935. They were the parents of at least 14 children, including my Grandmother Sylvia Rosasco. I also need assistance finding her Birth Documentation.

I am trying to obtain my Dual Citizenship and any help with this is appreciated.

You will need a parish record /Diocese search for this.

So after more intensive digging i learned Angelo is from Seren del Grappo.
Angelo Rosasco's father is documented as Giovanni Maria Rech. (why would the name change?) his mother Caterina Sagrillo.

Any help with this is appreciated.

I’m a Gardella with Rosasco family in the tree.
My great uncle, Fred Gardella, married a Victoria Rosasco in 1913 in Manhattan.

I did find an NYC marriage certificate for Angelo Rosasco and Paulina Gardella, Manhattan 1888.

I’m not sure how I might be related to Paulina but it has been my experience that all Gardellas are related and nearly all come from Neirone.

The Rosascos and Gardellas lived near or on Baxter Street in lower Manhattan.

I’m not sure if I can help you, but if you feel that I can, please let me know.

The marriage certificate I found for Angelo and Paulina does not match exactly with the information you have. Please bear in mind that mistakes often occurred on US documents as most Italian immigrants could not read or write and depended upon others to complete the documents for them. Indeed, Angelo’s signature is shown as his “x”.

The marriage certificate of 1888 is certificate number 6914. Manhattan. Both parties lived on Baxter Street, he at 37 Baxter and she at 39 Baxter. It was the first marriage for both. Angelo is listed as 23 years old and Paulina as19 years old. Angelo is listed as a candy maker.

It’s handwritten and I’m having trouble deciphering their fathers’ names.
Both mothers are listed as Katie.

Both the groom’s and bride’s places of birth simple state Italy.

It’s likely that you already have this info but I thought I’d pass it on, anyway.

My Victoria Rosasco’s parents were Giacomo Rosasco and Rosa Gardella.

I found Silvia’s birth certificate. Certificate number 41113. Manhattan.
Born August 25, 1905.
Father: Angelo Rosasco. Laborer. Address is 42 Baxter Street
Mother: Paulina Gardella. Address: same
Total children now living: 8

You can request a certified copy through the NYC Municipal Archives. Cost is $15. Personal checks accepted.
If Silvia died in NYC, you will not need her death certificate. If she died elsewhere, yiu will need to submit a certified copy of the death certificate with your order.

You will need to provide a copy of your ID and proof of address. And the request form must be notarized.

I’ll have to double check where to send your request but you should be able to find it by googling.

Please bear in mind that it takes NYC ages to process these requests. I submitted one for my father back in August. I’ve received confirmation on December 8 that the City is working on it and I’m still waiting.

I am in NYC and am very familiar with Manhattan and Brooklyn and, to a limited degree, the Bronx.

Should you need you need any assistance with NYC streets, avenues, neighborhoods, etc. let me know.

Some months ago I was lucky enough to find a young second cousin twice removed on Ancestry. His great great grandfather and my great grandfather were brothers from Neirone.
The cousin, Patrick, has helped me greatly. He mentioned Gardellas helping Gardellas….
You’re a Gardella and so am I. I’m here to help.

Thank You MaddalenaNYC!!!
That is the same Marriage certificate I have, but on Ancestry could not see the details. I am searching for Paulina’s arrival to the US… this is proving to be tricky. I may have found Angelo’s arrival at age 21. There are 2 documents that are similar, and require checking.

My real Search is for both Paulina and Angelo’s Birth Certificates from Italy.
You absolutely made my day by responding… thank you so much…. Distant cousin!
Do you have an Ancestry tree?

You’re very welcome. I do not have a family tree on Ancestry but my second cousin twice removed does and my branch is listed there. It can be found by looking for Teresa Dina Lagomarsino. Patrick McFawn maintains it.

I have found a Paulina Gardella in the Ellis Island database. You can join the Ellis Island Foundation for free and then will be able to search the ships’ manifests.

Here’s your Paolina

She is listed under her maiden name Paolina Gardella. This is common.

She travelled to NYC on the ship Nord America arriving NYC on 9/05/1901
She is traveling with six US born children:
Giovanni, 11
Stefano, 10
Bart, 7
Silvia, 6
Ida, 3
? 8 months

Last child’s name is not clear.

The manifest states that her husband, Angelo Rosasco resides on Baxter Street in NYC

Now, we know that your Silvia had not been born until 1905 but it was not uncommon for subsequent children to be named after deceased siblings. This occurred in my mother’s family.

The key take away here is Neirone (a commune of Genoa). The manifest states that Paolina’s residence in Italy is Neirone. Almost all Gardellas are from Neirone.

It is there, I believe, where you will find her birth act.

There is a mechanism on Ancestry to check records from Genoa but it is way beyond my skill set. My distant cousin, Patrick, was able to find a death act in Neirone for me.

P.S. my thought is that Paolina travelled back to Italy for an event, most probably a death in the family.

I double checked the NYC Municipal Archives for another earlier born Silvia Rosasco birth or death records but could not find same. The Municipal Archives database is notorious for being incomplete. Another explanation for two Silvia’s is that siblings were sometimes given the same first name but different middle names. This has occurred in my family.

I talk a lot. The Angelo Rosasco family, at one point, moved to Brooklyn. If you go to the Brooklyn Public Library website, you can, for free, search the old Brooklyn newspapers. A branch of my father’s family settled in Brooklyn. I’ve found quite a bit in those old newspapers. I hope that you will to.

Thank you again! You are amazing! The six children match my records, as John (Giovanni), Stefani, Albert, Elizabeth = Silvia, Ida, and possible Emma. Although I found one document saying Emma was born in Neirone. This makes sense as she would be returning to US with the new baby Emma.

You’re funny when you say you talk allot! I talk with my hands allot!
And yes this whole family moved to Brooklyn to Wycoff Street.

If you want to view the Gardellas I have found so far, you are welcome to view my ancestry as well. Deidre MacDonald Tree. I think it would be great to connect our Gardellas!
And I just love Gardellas helping Gardellas… I too will do this for others searching!
… and Rosasco’s!
Thank you so much, this information is priceless!
