What was life like in rural Campania in the late 1800s/ early 1900s?

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

What was life like in rural Campania in the late 1800s/ early 1900s?

Post by li_donn »

Hi,

My family are from Torrioni, Avellino and I'd really love to know more about what life was like there in the early 1900s/ late 1800s.

My grandmother's family were poor, and she has some memories of helping her family with work and taking care of her siblings, but I'm interested in learning more. She remembers her mother and grandmother being unqualified 'midwives' in the village, but I can't find any information about this.

I've not been able to find much information at all on Torrioni, and I'm not really sure how to go about researching this. Can anyone help me out with some information or recommendations of websites or books that might be helpful?

Thank you,

Lisa
