post-1922 naturalization...

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

post-1922 naturalization...

Post by aperrone »

Hi all!

After waiting over a year, I finally received the USCIS paperwork I requested -- and I am trying to figure out if I still have any remaining thread of hope for citizenship by descent.

My paternal great-grandparents were both born in Italy (1898 and 1901).

My GGF naturalized in 1926 -- just 18 months before my GF was born. I assumed this meant that my GF was not an Italian citizen at birth (and would have been the only one of the 5 children who wasn't!) and moved on with disappointment.

However, I am clearly a total newbie as I did not stop to think that because naturalization happened after 1922, my GGM may not have lost her citizenship -- until I saw the naturalization paperwork which clearly lists this out (and does NOT list my GGM's name at all anywhere on the paperwork).

Now, the next part is that I cannot seem to locate any naturalization paperwork for her. I will try to file a USCIS request but it took over a year to get a response, so curious if anyone can assist.

Family information:

Costrenzo/Costrenze Perrone (went by "Charles" in the US) (GGF)
May 13 1894 (or May 31 1894; there may have been a transcription error)
Tusa, Italy

Caterina Lombardo (went by "Catherine" in the US) (GGM)
December 24 1901
Tusa, Italy

Francis "Frank" Perrone (GF)
June 26 1989
His siblings: Mary, Annette, Joseph, and Rosario (all born before him)

Is anyone able to locate any documents indicating whether or not Catherine became a US citizen and, if so, when? Would love to know if our family still stands a chance at citizenship by descent or not!

Check with NARA to see if your GGM was still a non-citizen in 1940.

You can search their database to see an index of everyone who registered as an alien.
