In both records the mother of the baby isn't reported. In each case it just says that the child was born from his (Salvatore's) union with an unmarried woman, who was not related to him in anyway etc that would later prevent recognition of the child.

Neither. An orphan is a child whose (both) parents have died. A foundling is a child who has been abandoned and whose parents are unknown. This little person had a (known) father, and a mother who didn't want to be named, because she wasn't married to the father, therefore this little person would have been considered (I hate the word) "illegitimate". That's my take.

My thinking is that the mother was probably the same in each case so it might be worth looking through the marriages to see whether the parents later married and recognised the children as their own. (I remember you having this type of situation in your history before where several children were later recognized and "legitimised" through later marriage of the parents.

Happy to help.

(In my history I have a situation where a couple had four children and never married, basically because of class distinction. The father's parents wouldn't allow it because he was a "big wig" and the young woman was his house keeper. It was common knowledge in the town that he was the father of the children, but he was never named on the birth certs. Apparently the plan was for them to marry but then he died when their youngest was three.)

I found Salvatore Vonoflorio's Marriage record. --in 1888
He Married a widow called Carmela Corraro.
I confirmed this because his listed parents match a women ( Francesca Vonoflorio's parents ) in one of our trees.

No. 55--Image 2817 of 2,917
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... 639&i=2816

And Baldassare Vanoflorio's death record shows Carmela Corraro as his mother( but no mother listed ) in birth record below.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... 639&i=2062

This Salvatore Vonoflorio had four children ( from what we found ) born in same house address/ with no mother listed/ Amazing !!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay!!! So the plot thickens. I can barely read the writing at the base of the marriage record, but I see Baldassare and Salvatore's names there and the names of the other children Raffaela? Antonina?, so I am understanding that when they married they did legitimise the children they had prior to their marriage. It would be interesting to know when Carmela's first husband died. I'll see if I can play round with the record to make it more readable and get back to you.

Re the marriage record - great find you two!!! :D

Check my previous post here. Following on, I am understanding there were seven children born to Salvatore and Carmela, who they later recognized through marriage, as noted at the base of their 1888 marriage record:

21 November 1872 Antonina Vonoflorio
28 January 1876 Baldassare Vonoflorio
1 March 1877 Salvatore Vonoflorio
2 September 1879 Ciro Vonoflorio
7 February 1883 Ignazio? Vonoflorio
11 January 1886 name Filippo?
25 March 1888 Maria Vonoflorio

I was going to look for the birth records for you but Family Search timed out on me.

My eyes may have been playing tricks on me.

Ciro was born 2 February 1879 not 2 Sept: 1879 Birth Record No 30: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... 1639&i=299

Check my previous two posts. I'll check the other dates if you haven't already.

Ok. Carmela Corrado’s husband died on 17 Oct 1868 and his name was Baldassarre Vonoflorio and he was Salvatore’s brother.
As you can see their parents are the same.
This is the extract of his death from the marriage supplements which also contains the births of the spouses.

And this is the original one. #168

1886 Birth No 15 Filippa Vonoflorio (so a daughter not a son) DOB 11 January 1886: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... 639&i=2202

The 1883 and 1888 Birth Records seem to be not on that film so I was unable to locate Ignazio and Maria's birth records to verify. I haven't looked for Antonina's 1872 birth record so will leave that to you Teckat as I need to get on to other matters.

An intriguing story in more ways than one. Always happy to work you both.
