Surname "Scimia"

Post by mongoh »

To begin, thank you for taking the time to read this and for any information you are able to provide me. My father recently passed away, and it was our shared dreaming of traveling to Italy to see where our family comes from and potentially meet some distant relatives. Over the past few months, I have been putting my family history together on Ancestry, but am having trouble tracking down the Scimia lineage.

The information I know:

Antonio Scimia was born in Bagno, L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy on 3 Mar 1895. It is my belief that he was born to Carmine Scimia and Catarina Centi. It is my belief that he came to America when he was 17 year old on April 12th, 1912 but there are many "Antonio Scimia" entering the US from Bagno around that period of time. He married Elvira Theresa Le Donne. It is unsure where Elvira Le Donne was born, either in Pittsburg, PA or Ateleta Italy but she was born on 15 Sep 1905. It is my belief her parents were Vincenzo Le Donne and Marianna Ciotola.

Antonio died on 21 May 1978 in White Plains, New York and Elvira died on 01 Oct 1990 in White Plains, Westchester, New York, USA.

It is my belief that Antonio Scimia had siblings named Emidio and Giuseppe. It is my belief that Elvira had siblings named Elisa, Michael, Frank, Adeline.

I am having a hard time finding history on Antonio Scimia and Elvira Le Donne and hoping someone might be able to help.

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Birth act for Antonio Scimia son of Carmine, 32yo, and Caterina Centi, 28yo, (good that you pointed this out because one could also read her surname as Curti)
Born on 3 March 1895 in Bagno Grande in Via Centrale #10.

Marriage act between Carmine Scimia, 28yo, widower, born in Bagno and Caterina Centi, 28 yo, born in 6 February 1890.
Carmine’s parents were: Giacinto (deceased) and Rosa Biasini.
Caterina’s parents were: Costantino and Anna Salvi, both deceased.

Pubblicazioni di matrimonio.

Caterina’s mother name was written incorrectly and then corrected at the bottom of the act.

Carmine’s and Caterina’s twin sons born on 24 November 1890.
Emiddio born at 3pm. Act #83
Antonio born at 3.20pm. On the following page. Act #84
(This one will probably die soon after unfortunately)

This is AMAZING. Thank you so much for finding this and putting it together. It has already helped me piece many things together.

If you don't mind me asking, in your opinion, what would be the best method for me to find Antonio's siblings (Carmine and Caterina Scimia's other children).

Start by having a look in here.
There’s plenty more to find, I think, including the first marriage and the death of the first wife.

Then, potentially for Carmine’s birth and other ancestors in here:

Happy searching

Here is the arrival manifest... 1912 as you thought.

Antonio Scimia on line 5, age 17, leaving father Carmine in Bagno, and destination is Valhalla, NY. to cousin Croce Paolucci.

Hello again Farassino,

Thanks to you and the resources you provided, I was able to track down 5/5 boys and 1/2 girls! I think I found the 2nd girl but see Domenico Scimia listed as well as Carmine Scimia and Caterina Centi. If you do not mind, when you get a chance, can you translate the following:

Page 2440 / Act 23 / Giovanna Scimia.

As always, thanks for everything!

Hello,

It’s ok Giovanna is the one you’re looking for.

Domenico only declared the birth as head of the family, having the mother given birth in his house and because Carmine was away and confirms that Carmine and Caterina are the parents.

Well done!

Giovanna was born on 11 March 1894

Me again! I have found the Acts of Birth from my great-grandfather and all of his siblings. I am now moving on to finding their Acts of Marriage. My ultimate goal is to track down distant relatives living in the area and reaching out. When I search the sibling names in familysearch, I only get a digital summary of the Act of Marriage, not the certificate itself. I am wondering if you knew of an achieve of Birth, Marriage and Death Acts in Bagno, L'Aquila AFTER 1910. Or, if there is a way to directly view the certificate the familysearch summary is referencing?

See example of Giovanna Scimia, daughter of Carmine and Caterina Centi who you helped me translate earlier:

Thanks as always!
