Requesting Help finding Borgia

Post by willrat »

Hello! I am currently trying to find my great grandfather's records in hopes for citizenship and mapping my family tree. His name is Gennaro Borgia and the last residence he listed when he arrived in USA (1911) was Mondragone. He departed from Naples. I believe his birthday was September 19, 1888. When he arrived in USA, he changed his last name to Borrasca. Unfortunately this is all I can trace back.. Any help locating birth records and paternal/maternal info would be so amazing.
Thank you!

I could not find birth records of 1888 for Mondragone, and he is not in the military records for that year.
Can you post the documents you have?

It looks like he was called Borrasca since the beginning.
There are two entries for Gennaro Borrasca in the military records register of Caserta.
Born 19 September 1888 in Mondragone.
The second entry bears “Bosco’, probably a second surname or a form of identification.
Scroll down to page 125/161. #140

Also, on the ship manifest he was written as Borrasca Gennaro. Line #23.
Where did you get the “Borgia” from?

That's amazing information, thank you so much!

I have been told through family stories that his name was Borgia, but he changed it to Borrasca on the ship to America to start a new life. It seems the story has been changed through the generations!

Would you be able to find anything about his parents? Or maybe his birth certificate? Any more information that could help me piece together where that story may have come from? And I would love to learn if I have any family still living in Italy :)
