Anyone know about early 1900 Casacalenda, Italy?

Post by sean.kinney »

My Great grandfather immagrated to the USA in 1920 through Ellis Island. He really dint share any information with his children about the mother land and his family there. My grandmother asked me if I could find any information on my ancestors online, and so that brings me here. I tried a few sites with fee's and you pay and get no results. Can anyone help me along my way? He is from Casacalenda, Italy and his name was Francesco D'Onofrio. He came to the USA on November 1st 1920.

Any info would be greatly appreaciated!

The civil records of the comune of Casacalenda have been microfilmed by the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) aka the Mormon Church. Go to www.familysearch.org then Library>FamilyHistoryLibraryCatalog>PlaceSearch and enter Casacalenda. You can then view the film details for the Registri dello Stato Civile, 1809-1900. There are 56 reels and they cover birth, banns, marriage, death, and other miscellaneous records. Pay particular attention to the processetti, which will contain many extracts of birth and death records from the 1700s. These films can be viewed at the Family History Centers of the LDS. You can find the one nearest to you at www.familysearch.org. If your GGF Francesco d'Onofrio was born prior to 1900, you should be able to find his birth record on these films. Hopefully, you also know his parents' names. If you are not familiar with Italian civil records, Italian Genealogical Records by Dr. Trafford Cole is excellent. Good luck!

Sean....

I have truly checked the civil records of Casacalenda for your Francesco D'Onofrio. As I stated before, the only Francesco born in that period was named D'Opera. No D'Onofrio births anywhere in the neigborhood and the ones I did find were not named Francesco.

Perhaps our last poster, Maria Mazzaco might have access to Casacalenda and might be able to help with this particular record. It could be that his residence was Casacalenda, but that his birth occurred in another comune nearby. Or that the handwriting is so that I couldn't read it...or a rare case of where the name did not get indexed.

Anyway, before you order in films, maybe Maria can give you a hand!

Hang in there......one day you will find the answer I am sure.

Hello,
to find any civil record or certificate about your ancestor you can write only in italian to

Comune di Casacalenda
Ufficio di Stato Civile
Corso Roma 78
86043 Casacalenda (CB)
Italy

or write, also only in italian, to Archivio di Stato di Campobasso

http://wwwdb.archivi.beniculturali.it/S ... POBASSO%22

or rent Casacalenda civil record microfilm to FHL (mormon church) nearest to you

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... ato+civile++

I hope it helps,
bye Riccardo
