Charles in Croatia

Does anyone know what Charles might be in Croatian?

I have a Charles / Charley Brunski and I'm having problems finding him in anything other than US census records.

My grandma, mom and I all speak Croatian and are fairly sure there is no translation for Charles as Nuccia said. I really can't think of any possibilities....sorry.

I think I found him on a ship manifest - but I can't read the manifest to even make out his name (even though it states it is on there).

He is listed by only his last name on ancestry (I use it for free at the library - but don;t have it at home). I can't seem to find it on the ellis island site.

It is BRUNSKI - arrival date 5 Aug 1895. Born abt 1877, Came from Austria through Bremen on the TRAVE into NY.

Any idea where I can find a better copy of this document?

It looks like the original manifest is spoiled so this might be as good as it gets. On the other hand, you could try writing away under the FOIA and ask for the complete file.

DARN - Nope. Well - actually I don't know where he was when he first arrived. Could have started there as there are still Brunski's in PA.

It was a shot in the dark but the information matched up for the most part up to that point.

I sent away for a search of his marriage license today - that sure if it is going to tell me anything. I included a letter telling them he may go by a different first name. I'm "guessing" that he and his wife Anna were married in La Salle County. I found her today in Ancestry. Everything matched up with what I have including the fact that she was going to a town in La Salle County, Illinois. The 1910 census has them living in La Salle County. I can't seem to find either in the 1900 or 1920 census. Pick them up again in the 1930 census in Summit COunty Ohio - which is where they died.

Cheryl, a hint for finding the 1920 census.
Try one of the children's first names (Matilda,
since it's a little unusual) with no last name.
Born in IL, in 1904.
If the family is in Ohio, should pop-up pretty
quickly (since IL would also be unusual)
Add parent's names Char* & Ann*
Should work - fill in stuff you know, leaving
out chances for mis-spelling...

For 1900 a different approach may work.
Probably can't use children's names, since
first child, Annie? wasn't born until 1900?
Try only part of names followed by an *:
Cha* Bru* born 1876 +/- 1 yr
wife Ann*
State was probably IL.
Let us know if these don't work and we'll try
something else.
You should end up with a few more immigration
dates you can check.

Website for Illinois state archives.....I picked up one hit on the surname for LaSalle county, in the death index for 1916 and after:
