Surname Savino

Hello,

I have traced my family back to 1880 when Antonio and Catherine Savino arrived in the US with their infant daughter Maria.

How would I go about finding out where in Italy they came from? The boat they took to the US departed out of Antwerp and the ship's manifest only says that they were from Italy...nothing more specific.

Hi Kristen and welcome to the forum. Can you post the manifest you have for members of the forum to see? What was Catherines maiden name? Do you know approximate years of birth, where did they settle in US? Did Antonio and Catherine have any other children besides Maria?

OK...here's the information I have on this family:

Antonio and Catherine Savino came to the US on the "Switzerland" out of Antwerp. Arrived in the US on Jun 21, 1880. Their daughter Maria was 5 months old at the time of the voyage. (information is from Passenger lists: Italians to America, 1880-1893....manifest ID# 80059)

Antonio Savino
b. May 1839
d. between 1900 and 1910 in Massachusetts

Catherine (unknown maiden name)
b. Jan 1850

Children:

Maria: born in Italy ~Feb 1880
Joseph: b. Chester, PA 5 May 1881
Nicholas: b. MA 1883
Rose: b. MA 1885
Annie: b. MA 1892

I'm really baffled at this point...neither of them were naturalized, so the only information I have for them is that they came from Italy.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

I found this for Antonio Savino, are you positive on the birth being in May and the year of birth 1839?

You say that Antonio died between 1900 and 1910, is that because Catherine turns up as a widow in the 1910 census or is there some other reason you believe he did between those years?

Maybe someone on the forum can pull census information for the family of Antonio Savino.

They are listed in the CastleGarden.org site but not much more info there:

Note that they abbreviate his name to Anto. so it did not come up when I used Antonio; Catherine worked though and so got him and daughter.

There are 450 Savinos listed for all census years; no Antonios match up, so I tried Catherine with no results at all; same for Maria.

Then Joseph and one matches in Boston 1910 with the right age:

His mother, sisters except Maria and brother are with him and his wife and son, Antony R.;

There are two Joseph Savinos in Boston for the 1920 census, but not this one: the ages do not match and the family members are different.

No luck with the other children: ages do not match for Nicholas or Rose, and no results for Ann.

Perhaps someone can find something on Ancestry, as sometimes the census is not complete on HeritageQuest (Persi) which I access through our local library; check your own library to see if it is available. They seem to search on the Head of Household here.

Also the Draft Registration cards.

Great finds Dave. I haven't been able to locate any info on the death of Antonio. Was hoping to find city of death - could lead to cemetary and info on where he was born in Italy. I'll keep looking.

WOW! Thanks so much for the response. I was getting discouraged researching this branch of my family. I'm so glad I found this forum

I got the May 1839 birth info for Antonio from the 1900 census, so it's not 100%, but it's all I have about him at the moment.

I'm in the process of getting Joseph's marriage record - he was married in RI. It would be so nice if it has Catherine's maiden name on it.

Thank you for the possible death record. I'll definitely look at that.

In looking at vj's 1900 census it lists Antonio and Katerina as born in Italy, and it lists the son born someplace else. I can't read what it says though. Can someone take a look and see what you come up with?

Edit...........I got it - says Pennsylvania for his place of birth and the other kids all say Massachusettes.

yes, it's Pennsylvania... I checked and birth records weren't kept at that time, so I can't get a birth record for Joseph.

I've been checking the manifest for Savino's arriving after 1880 and before 1903, thinking that most relatives came within a few years after the first family came. I've found a couple of manifests that have the passenger going to PA and a couple that have the passenger going to Boston - unfortunately it doesn't say who the passenger is meeting. I'm still looking.

I knew Valarie would come up with a bunch of information. Heritage Quest showed nothing for 1880 and 1900.

Was there any trouble following the link to the 1910 census that I posted? When I tried it again, I got to the sign in page; later it was ok, but I had signed in to download the tif or pdf files.

It was clearer than the one Valarie found (not sure why). I do not know if I can post a pdf here. The gif gets blocky when magnified.

Just wanted to make sure the census page could be seen.

When looking for relatives in Italians to America, I finally found the mother of the children above their names with her maiden name used rather than the married, as Elizabeth has said was the custom. It is the same on the passport, and the children under the father's name.

So check the books again, maybe the maiden name of Catherine is there.

Thanks for all your efforts. Antonio and Catherine didn't arrive in the US until June of 1880, so they won't be on that census. I now have this family in 1900, 1910, and 1930. I had searched 1920 page by page and their house was skipped.

I just sent a request for a copy of Antonio's death record. I'm hoping to get some useful information from that. (Thank you SOOO much for pointing me to that...I hadn't realized that the MA Archives had put their index online)

After that I will get Joseph's marriage record from RI, hopefully it will have his mother's maiden name on it.

Then I'm going to try and find Catherine's death record. I know she's alive in 1917 because I have her entry in the Boston Directory for that year. I need to go to the vital records office to see if I can find her death after that.

Thanks again...all the help and advice has been much appreciated, and has given me new insight in how move foward with research on this family as well as my other Italian branch.
