Trying to help a friend

Post by JMFL »

Good evening everyone. I am trying to help a friend learn more about his family. His parents are deceased and I don't think he has any remaining family that knows any information. Here is all that he does know:
Grandfather= Giuseppe Cosentino born Ragusa, Sicily
Grandmother= Conchetta Iocono born Ragusa, Sicily
Mother=Marie Consentino born USA (The ngot added somewhere along the line
Uncles= Salvatore, James, Joseph I believe they were all born in US
He has no dates to give me.

Any info anyone might have, or if anyone has any suggestions on where I can look to try and guide him toward finding any info?
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
have a good night!

... does he know where the parents passed away (state) ...?

This with states they resided in will assist greatly.

The only thing I know is that his parents married in New Jersey. I will try and contact him and see if he knows what states his grandparents and/or mom may have resided in. I'll also find out when his parents passed away.
Thanks,

Hmm, this might be him or a relative. I do know that Giuseppe was married to Conchetta in Italy so his marital status would have been M. Of course, there could be a mix up in the manifest info. I am trying to get more information, and I'll post when I learn some more details.
Thanks though for responding so quickly, I am sure my friend will appreciate it.

If the grandparents also took the new spelling, this could narrow down the search, only two show up in the SSDI with this spelling:

Name: Concetta Consentino
SSN: 189-56-4508
Last Residence: 15147 Verona, Allegheny, Pennsylvania, United States of America
Born: 27 Jan 1907
Died: Jun 1985
State (Year) SSN issued: Pennsylvania (1976)

Name: Concetta Consentino
SSN: 174-10-3233
Last Residence: 08865 Phillipsburg, Warren, New Jersey, United States of America
Born: 9 Dec 1915
Died: Nov 1975
State (Year) SSN issued: Pennsylvania (Before 1951)

However, under the original spelling, there are 10 results....

Here is all the information my friend now has on his family:
His grandparents were born in Raugusa Italy. They were married in NJ. They lived in Patterson, NJ. They had 4 children, all born in NJ.
Guisepppe arrived from Italy on Aug 13, 1912 on the ship Canada from Palermo. (The one listed in a post from wildspirit was correct). Guiseppe was born on March 1890 in Italy. His wife, Conchetta), was born Sep 5 1897 maiden name Iocono.
They were married in NJ on Dec 16 1917. They had 4 children, all from NJ born 1918, 1924, 1928 and 1930. he has dates for most of the events but some of his documents list the days differently on them. So I just put the month and year as that is consistent with information he has.
He has tried to get his family records from Italy but the town has no records. I suggested he might try the church records but since I didn't have to do that for my family records i was at a loss as to how he would find the right church.
He also wasn't able to find much info from NJ records. Not sure why. He wants the info for family history and also for dual citizenship purposes.
Any info that you can uncover is greatly appreciated.
Thanks and have a good day.

Hello,
you can request Giuseppe Cosentino military record and military draft card to Ragusa State Archive, also you can request the copy from the real SSDI of Concetta Iacono (Cosentino), so you can now more details about their place and date of birth
I hope it helps

Giuseppe would have been 20 on or about 1900 and his conscription records (registro di Leva) would be available and contains names of parents, residence, date and place, vocation, literacty etc etc.

You can go to http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwi ... tters.html for form letters in Italian to the provincial archives at Archivio di Stato di Ragusa, Sezione Militare, Viale Del Fante 7,97100, Ragusa, Sicilia Italy.

There is no charge for requesting documents. =Peter=

I will check footnote for any records there, I have had no personal experience with acquiring New Jersey records so maybe another member can fill us in as to the difficulty.
