help finding grandparents

Post by Teapot »

I need help finding my grandparents, who were from San Mango D'Aquino, Calabria. My grandfather was Rosario Gabriele Fiorillo, son of Angelo and Cecilia Fiorello. He was born around 1879 and died in America on August 8, 1951. My grandmother was Theresa Caterina,(or Catrina) also from San Mango. She was the daughter of Antonio and Magdalena Caterina, also born around 1879 and died in America in 1929. I don't know what year they were married, but I do know my grandfather came to America in 1902 and my grandmother followed with their daughter, Maria Cecilia Fiorillo in 1908. It would mean so much to me to learn more about them. I can't find any record of my grandfather entering this country. I can find his brother and my grandmother and their child, but no information on Rosario.
Thank you in advance for any help or directions to take. I am very new at genealogy searching.

Hard time finding anything as well. Are you sure they came through Ellis. Possibly Boston??

I have the manifest showing my grandmother came through Ellis, as did my grandfather's brother. But I can't find his name anywhere. I do know that he couldn't read or write, but I don't know if that would make any difference. Thanks for taking the time to help me. I do have a military registration card copy with his name and place of birth listed on it, so I know the information i provided is accurate. I wondered if it's possible to find my grandmother's name on a marriage license in Calabria and find more about my grandfather that way. It's a back door approach, but I can't think of any other way to locate them.

Oh THANK YOU so much. This has to be him! I only just received this military registration a few days ago, which included his middle name. I knew it was the letter "G", but had no idea it was Gabriele until then. It didn't occur to me to check under that name.
If I may ask another question, how can I obtain their marriage license or birth certificates? You all have been so wonderfully helpful and I do appreciate it.

My great great grandfather was Vincenzo Fiorillo/Fiorelli, born circa 1872 in San Mango d'Aquino, married to Maria Romito. He came here circa 1897. Do you think there's a relation?
My Italian surnames:

Caserta: Maietta, Rossano, Tessitore, Negro, Peluso, Musone

Campobasso: D'Andrea, Barile

Catanzaro: Fiorelli/Fiorillo, Romito

It's very likely that there is some relationship there. My grandfather, Rosario, had two baby boys, both named Vincent, and both died around the age of one. They tended to name their children after other family members. If you find out any more information, I'd sure like to hear about it, if it's no trouble to you. I intend to order a copy of my grandfather's birth certificate some time soon, to try to learn more about him and his family. Thanks for asking me, though.

Did Gabriele by any chance live in Lawrence County PA in his life?

It's possible. I know he worked as a cook for a time at a restaurant in Pittsburgh. Also, I know he knew someone close in Kensington, PA because we found an old letter from this man. I'm asking a local language teacher to translate it for us. That's about as much as I know.

By the way, is the Ross G. Fiorello that Valarie mentioned above, the one who died in Ohio, your grandfather? If so, I have an obit for him that I found on Ancestry.com. If it is tell me and I'll post it. Now back to Vincenzo. I was wondering, do you think it's possible Gabriele and Vincenzo were brothers? I don't know Vincenzo's parents names so they may be. Do you have any family members who might remember Vincenzo? Anyway, Vincenzo has a living daughter, so I'll try to get a hold of her, and see if she knows his parents names.

I'm sorry, I have no idea if they were brothers. I do know my grandfather (yes, he died in Ohio) had a brother, Angelo. If there were others, I'm not aware. My biggest problem is that I don't have any older relatives left who could answer any of my questions. All of my mother's siblings are deseased now. I can tell you that Rosario's parents were Angelo and Cecilia Repone Fiorillo, all from San Mango. That's as far as I've gotten with research. Please keep me posted if you learn anything more.
