Post by choprjohn »

Hi; Im looking for information on my grandparents James Vincent & Rose Yemma born in Calabria in 1880 & 1881 respectively. My grandfather 1st worked in a mine in W. Virginia, later he & my grandmother setteled in Syracuse NY. Any information will be helpful, including birthplace, marriage dates, years of immigration, ship that brought them to U.S. etc. It may have been spelled Iemma when he lived in Italy. Thanx in advance...Johnnie

It bears pointing out again that the Italian spelling of this name is almost certainly "Iemma". You may want to keep this in mind while performing your searches.

We have two John's in this thread...johnnyonthespot and choprjohn.....

So to johnnyonthespot.....very helpful insight on the name!

And choprjohn......we have an excellent team here at IG......may take some digging, but I'm sure they will turn up the proverbial "needle in the haystack"!! With both parents names, as well as children, along with birth years and locations...our members should be able to find records of interest.

who know if this record could be interesting:
1910 United States Federal Census
about Vincenzo Johnna
Name: Vincenzo Johnna
Age in 1910: 32
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1878
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Brother
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Home in 1910: Manhattan Ward 22, New York, New York
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Male
Year of Immigration: 1909
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Cafena Johnna 30
Verna Johnna 26
Vincenzo Johnna 32 (brother-profession: waiter in a hotel)
date census 15 apr 1910

the surname sure is Jemma, first version of Iemma; both the versions are right; but Jemma is the first; Iemma in modern italian spelling...

VJ the 1920 census definately looks like my grandfather & his family. No, the Amie-Yemma-Brignole Family Tree belongs to my 1st cousins wife who has given me a lot of great info & the pictures posted there. I would have never gotten this far without her! I have never heard the" Games " name before, even tho the information seems correct, could it be just a spelling error?..... SUANJ Are you saying this might be my grandfathers brother, or my grandfather? Im confused. Has anyone in here found a birthplace for my grandparents, I heard a long time ago they may have been distant cousins & may (im guessing here) have had the same last name Thanx again Johnnie

Hi!
I think it may have been spelled correctly (or 'sounded out'), but was written badly or badly transcribed.
