DiLaura in Foggia

Post by oilman19 »

I have been trying to find the immigration of my uncle's family. After perusing 9,000 records, I wonder if it is possible they did not come through Ellis Island. Maybe someone has access to a better search engine.
My uncle is Silvio Lawrence DiLaura (later changed by him to DeLaura). He married Ana Bothilde Andersen (born in Denmark) raised in Hartford, CT on January 18, 1928 and raised 2 boys Donald & Gilbert.

Hi Jim,

The Silvio you are referring to is the last name listed in the 1900 census, correct? If so, he was only 11 months old (11 of 12 months age listed). If Ercole immigrated in 1893...Silvio was probably born here. No immigration record would exist.

Just noticed that the "Silvir Di Laura" on your census is a female. Had you noticed that?

Hi T.,

Maybe I was not clear in my request. I am seeking the immigration of Silvio's family prior to his birth.
Good luck,

Jim

Ok...I'll keep looking.
In the 1910 Census I noticed that Ercole's wife Virigina is deceased. Her death record may offer some insight into her place of birth if you don't have a town of origin yet.

Maybe the town of origin was Alfedena - L'Aquila Province - Abruzzo region

here a possible arrival mamifest for Ercole Di Laura (1893), age is a little bit off but the name is not so common, so...

Hi Jim,

I found your uncle's mother, Virgina; brother, Pasquale; and sister, Domenica, on a ship's manifest. The manifest is VERY difficult to read in it's original view on Ancestry. Maybe you can take a look at it yourself, or try to find it on ellisisland.org using the following information:

Ship: Kaiser Wilhelm II, Port of Embarkation: Bremen, Date: May 11, 1896

Passenger # - looks like 212, 213, 214 toward bottom of page...
Mother looks like Virginia Amadei, age 25
Son - Pasquale Di Laura, age 6
Dghtr - Domenica, age 4

It only lists country, not town of origin...and the destination looks like "halvaston"...very hard to read,

There is another DiLaura child on the line above Virginia named Orforio, and someone who could be his mother on the line above him with the last name DiGiulio.

1. T. - I haven't seen the 1910 census yet, that is news to me. Will check it out. I believe they were from Foggia. Sorry I left that out. Thanks

2. Laura - you always come through with the info. That looks like the record. The age is within 1 year (it looks like 29) he was born in 1863. Is this town near Foggia? Thank you

3. T. - I haven't looked yet but that must be it. I had her name as Virginia Amodio. You folks are amazing.

Thank you both very much,

Jim

You're welcome!

FYI - The ports of departure are listed as Genoa and Bremen for that ship.

Also - Domenico is on the manifest as a male, not a female as I stated. Sorry... :-(
