Corleone

I know my fathers last residence in Italy, was Corleone, and I'm pretty sure he was born there. Is it possible to get information from that city? If so, who do I contact?

:D Hi, Thanks for the informantion. I've been looking at the various links, and found 75 De Caro's in Palermo, but nothing in Corleone. I'm going to keep looking for more. Now that I've found all those De Caro's, I have to figure out how to communicate, since I've forgotton my Italian. This is starting to be fun.

You don't need to know how to write in Italian just go to this website
http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwi ... tters.html

If you wish to know addresses just ask and we are there!! =peter=

Hi Peter,
First of all, thank you for your help. I have found 75 De Caro's in Palermo, none in Corleone. It was starting to be fun, but now it's overwelming. I would like to know where my father and grandfather lived and in what house and if I have any relatives there. I would like to see where my roots began. I can't tell if the homes that I see from the satilite pictures are the original buildings or not. My father was born in 1889, that's a long time for some buildings to still be there. What do I do? :(

Ellis Island records show that immigrants from Corleone to the US were De Cara, not De Caro. Is this the correct manifest?

http://www.ellisisland.org/search/passR ... 2265011110

There are still no De Caras in Corleone, but it is a much rarer name appearing in only 2 towns in Sicily and 3 on the Mainland of Italy.

Along with Peter & mj's suggestions, you may want to start with your father's birth record from Corleone
(use both surname spellings and both birth years)
The birth act will have his parent's names.
Often the address is included along with other information

Thank you everyone. The problem is, I'm not 100% sure how to spell my own last name. Over the years, I've seen it spelled, "De Caro and Dicar". Would this help? My grandmother's name was; Maria Fiducia, and my grandfather's name was; Guiseppi De Caro or Dicar. Even in the obituaries from the news paper, the name is listed, De Caro and also in perenthisies (Dicar).
It would be awsome just to learn the correct spelling of my last name. My father is buried in the Italian cemetary in Colma California, and on the headstone the name is De Caro. But, that might even be wrong. I'll continue to look at those links you've given me to see what I might find.
Thanks, Vince

Hi,
I would request a Birth Act for

Nicola De Caro/ De Cara
born circa 24 June 1889
(remember in Italy it's Day/Month/Year not Month/Day/Year)
born in/near Corleone

father Giuseppe De Caro/De Cara, born circa 1855
mother Maria (Andensia) Fiducia, born circa 1855
---

note: first name Andensia (Hortense) is from a lined-off (did not sail) manifest from 1907

edit: corrected Maria birth year

edit: added 1907 manifest
note: did not sail - names lined off

1907 manifest

25 Mar 1907, Citta Di Torino, Palermo to NY
lines 23-25

Andensia Fiducia 51
- last residence Corleone
- destination NY
- joining husband Giuseppe De Cara at 220 E 97th Street
- born in Corleone
Carlo De Cara 13
Saverio De Cara 8

If it appears that De Cara is the correct surname for your family you can confirm this in various ways like tracing the family back to 1820's thru your fathers family that are on micorfilm at the nearest Mormon church family History Library where they can be rented out, thru his military records and the Corleone birth, family certificate of all members of his immediate family based upon your grandfathers name (you get this from your dads Birth record"ESTRATTO DI NASCITA"=long form ). =Peter=

You should be proud. Pacino's parents came from Corleone. Yeah, what are the odds (Since he played Micheal Corleone in the Godfather).
