Need help to find relatives
Need help to find relatives
I am doing research on my wife's family who immigrated to the US from Italy. The problem is I can not find them anywhere in the Ellis Island database. I am looking for two families 1)Andreaccio who immigrated in 1898 and 2)Postest who immigrated in 1912.
I have found both families in the US Censues but I have tried different combainations using the Ellis Island web site. The problem I have is no one knows were they came from in Italy. I found the dates of immigration from the census so I hope they are correct.
Does anyone have any ideas where to start next.
Thanks!!

Yes, Lucy is a Potesta and the wife of James Andreaccio. I have the 1920 and 1930 census for her parents. That is were it mention they immigrated in 1912/1913.

Re: Need help to find relatives
Maybe the real lastname was Andreacchio (Andreaccio doesn't exist) mainly present in the Calabria region in Italy...

Re: Need help to find relatives
Possible arrival manifest for Antonio Andreacchio??
June 24, 1897:
Antonio Andreacchio, age 36 (approx. birth year 1861), married, from Simbario (Calabria Province) to New York (or Chicago?) to join his brother...
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0007
I knoe age is a bit off but it was very common for the immigrants to make them younger once in the New World
Laura
edit to add:
http://www.gens.labo.net/
digit Andreacchio in "cognome" and you'll see were the lastname is present in Italy

Re: Need help to find relatives
Laura,
Yes, that is the Lawrence in the Potesta family. His date matches with his SS Death Index birth date. So, now I have where he was born but not sure of the spelling. It looks like Cannalonga which is a part of Salerno.
Thaks for this information, I do not understand why it did not show up when I did a search for Lawrence on draft cards. Anyone, now I have something to go on.
Next, Andreaccio .

Re: Need help to find relatives
I would like to thank VJ and Laura for this information on Potesta. Do you find the information in the Ellis Island web site? This is wonderful information that I can pass on to my wife. It looks like the children names and different from both mother and father. This is the second time I notice the mother's name is different. Could this be her maiden name? The dates are close to the information I have. I can not thank you enough for providing this data.
Were you able to retrieve the information from the Ellis web site some were else. I tried to find a site that would like the ships arriving at Ellis Island by date but I could not.
I know you have helped me with the Potesta. Is there any information you could provide on Andreaacio?
Again, many thanks!!!!

Yes you're correct, Passaro/ero is Vincenza's maiden name.
In Italy women keep their maiden name.
The manifests were found on ancestry. com

Re: Need help to find relatives
Hi Fred,
You can access Ellis Island records by ship, then by date. However, I haven't been able to access by date first, then by ship.
If you click on link under Passenger Search for "search by ship" you will get an alphabet. After choosing the first letter of the ship name you will have a list of ships. Click on the ship and a list of years comes up. When you choose a year you will be given a list of dates of arrival and ports of departure. Helps to narrow things down a bit when you have a ship's name. Just an option to keep in reserve...
Good luck.
