Hello,
I'm in the process of tracking down proof (or lack thereof) of my grandfather's naturalization in US. I've sent in all the search requests on the federal, state, and county level but this morning I found a 1934 Passenger List where my grandfather indicated "by father citizenship." He was an adult, 24 years old at the time.
At first, I interpreted 'by father citizenship' as meaning he had citizenship through his father, who had (presumably) naturalized. But since he was an adult, and an Italian citizen himself, wouldn't his father's citizenship status not have any impact on his own? I'm confused after seeing this. Any insight into the validity of his statement?
Thanks!

Hello,
You may be correct
His father may have listed him on his Petition for Naturalization when he was still under 18 yrs old
Important if they were both born in Italy...
If you give us a few details perhaps we could help you look?

Re: "by father citizenship"
Thanks vj & Peter! Yes, both were born in Italy. It hadn't occured to me that my g-grandfather may have put my grandfather's name on his petition for naturalization prior to my grandfather turning 18. Very possible, as my grandfather first arrived in 1928 when he was 17 and I think his father was already here. My grandfather lists a New Jersey address on the 1934 passenger list and I think he was returning from a visit to Italy. If he arrived originally in 1928, then by 1934 he'd have fulfilled the 5-year residency and age requirements.
Peter, to answer your question, on the ship's manifest, it was in the citizenship column that my grandfather indicated 'by father citizenship.'
Thanks for your feedback!

Doesn't the ships manifest reflect the fathers' citizenship number and date of naturalization?? =Peter=

to many 'funny' things happened a hundred years ago. Get a copy of the naturalization certificate!
