gizzi family, new york

Post by dragoni »

i thought i had located vincenzo gizzi, brother of my greatgrandmother. folks here had found a 1910, 1920 and 1930 census in chautauqua county, sheridan township, new york. subsequently i found a site and ordered the naturalization papers for this vincenzo gizzi. those papers identify he was born in opi, italy in 1870. i do know for certain from civil records that my gioacchino vincenzo gizzi was born in 1868 in gioia sannitica, italy and that he was going to williamstown new york when he came over (ellis island). the dates differences are not of great concern but opi is in abruzzo and gioia in caserta. williamstown is near utica which is a fair distance form sheridan. i think i may have found someone else's vincenzo gizzi.

could someone who has access check census records for 1910 or 1920 for the utica area to see if there is a vincenzo (or gioacchino vincenzo) gizzi? thanks.

Do you have any additional names of persons who might have been in the household during the 1920 and 1930 census?

i can't be sure as i was relying on my grandfather's 97 year old baby sister's memory . she thought his wife's name was angeline and perhaps a daughter named tressa (most likely teresa).

i believe the manifest is my vincenzo's wife. the sheridan census isn't him as that fellow, based on his naturalization papers, was born in the wrong italian town, opi in abruzzo. my vincenzo was definitely born in gioia.

not sure how the ancestry allows searching but the williamstown area of new york is the spot.

thanks.

i just finished looking at the manifest. more interesting information is there. angela was also travelling with a son raffaele. vincenzo's fathers name was raffaele - the naming tradition appears to be holding.

the destination also makes sense as my greatgrandfather, vincenzo's brothe rin law, was living in the camden nj area when he first arrived.

hopefully i will get lucky and someone will find a census for him.

thanks so much.

Yes, I overlooked Raffaele travelling with his mother and sisters...
On his line there is an important note for his naturalization... looks like he got it in Philadelphia??

I noticed it does exist also a Williamstown in NJ (Gloucester county)

laura:

mille grazie. that is my vincenzo gizzi, thank you so much. the williamstown, nj makes sense now as my grandfather's baby sister rosa identified a house in which she claims to have been born in williamstown nj.

another example of being doubly careful when doing research. after a couple of years of searching and receiving help, i was certain that the vincenzo gizzi from sheridan new york, married to maria angela, was my relative. to make as close to 100% certain as i could i ordered his naturalization papers. who'd of thunk...two vincenzo gizzis, one born in 1868 the other 1870, both married to an angela, both emigrating roughly the same time, and generally in the same geographic region of the country.

time to do some exploration in the new jersey area for other information. my greatgrandfather claimed to have been naturalized and i had written to every local court house and the new york federal one looking for his naturalization but noone had any record. could you search the database for philadelphia for me? his name was antonio domenico pacelli, wife name of maria apollonia gizzi, hometown dragoni. with the year (1901 in one place, 1902 in another) he cited on the census he would not have had any living children.
