Name Problem
Re: Name Problem
I think you might be right as I looked back at some other documents and found that my grandfather listed the same address 59 Center Street Jersey City NJ when he appied for his Social Security # when he was 30 years old. How do I get the 1930 census corrected? Did a census taker fill these forms out or the people who were giving the info?

Re: Name Problem
Ummm... I don't think this is possible. Actually, I am pretty certain about it.Grombone wrote:...How do I get the 1930 census corrected?
Nowadays, the Census bureau mails out forms to every household and only sends "enumerators" out to visit those households that do not fill out and return the form in a timely manner.Did a census taker fill these forms out or the people who were giving the info?
Back in the early days, the enumerators went door-to-door and interviewed the head of each household. Obviously, there were language difficulties in areas with large immigrant populations. It didn't help, I am sure, that Italians pronounce some important letters (I, E, A) quite differently than English-speakers do.

On ancestry. com you can add alternate information.Grombone wrote:...How do I get the 1930 census corrected?...

Hi!
Been looking for your family's 1920 census on and off for the last two days without success. Especially looking in Jeresy City since that is where Antonio Albano's WWI Card was from. Do you have any reason to think they could have been somewhere else?
Thanks! Valarie

Re: Name Problem
But, to be clear - doesn't that only affect the ancestry.com database? I mean, this doesn't help in any way regards Grombone's need for certified census reports for submission with his dual citizenship application. Or am I missing the point?vj wrote:On ancestry. com you can add alternate information.Grombone wrote:...How do I get the 1930 census corrected?...

You are correct, the alternate information on the surname will only affect the ancestry. com database.
Angelo's SS Application with the same address should help to support the assertion that it is the correct census for his mother if the census is needed.

Re: Name Problem
Question If I had an attorney draw up an affadavit and had my grandfathers 2 cousins verify that my grandfather name changed when he was taken in by another family. Would that be considered? As so far I cannot find any records of his Original last name on anything other then the records I have from Italy. My grandfather stayed with these two cousins. They are 93 and 95 years old. Thanks
Re: Name Problem
Or if there was some kind of "adoption papers after the fact" that a judge would recgonize that an adoption had taken place and this is the same person.

Re: Name Problem
I bet an attorney could draw somtihg up that says this is the same person and after you supply the judge with the affidavites he could issue a ruling.
I can't find anything like this, and it would prably be the first time a judge did it but the consulate would be abliged to accept it.
