Buona Sera!
I have a copy of my great-grandfather's social security number application. His name was William (Guglielmo) Pagni. His parents' names were Pietro Pagni and Geldrede Caietti according to this form! He was born Oct 14, 1876 in Lucca, Italy. On everything else I've seen though, his town is listed as Ponte Buggianese. His date of arrival in the US was Oct 22, 1899. He went to Chicago IL to visit his cousin Silvio Pagni (who I am also searching for!) and then went to California, where he died in San Francisco in 1951.
I know nothing further back for my great-grandfather's life in Italy, but I am really thrilled to know his parents' names....Hurrah!
I am so excited to have found this website and group and forum....I am taking a class to learn to speak italian...and one day (shooting for the next 2-3 years) I will go to Italy and meet distant relatives!

Re: Surnames Pagni & Caietti from Ponte Buggianese?
Hi and welcome to the forum,
I found this record in Castle Garden, but could not find the manifest on Ellis Island. Can someone check Ancestry?

Re: Surnames Pagni & Caietti from Ponte Buggianese?
Thanks everyone! But I already have that info...I was hoping to find some info about Pagni or Caietti back in Italy, since those are my g-g-grandparents who apparently did not come to the U.S.

There are civil records only from 1883 to 1903 and canbe seen onmicrofilm at your nearest Mormon family history library (www.familysearch.org).
Your familiarity with Italian genealogy can help you trace your family thru family and church records. Go to this website and become proficient.

....by the way there is a record for Guglielmo Pagni on the www.ellisisland.org website arriving 10/22/1899 onthe ship La Bretagne at age 22 single and destined to Chicago. He is passenger #3 on the ships manfiest. look under the guglielmo Pagni name and no other on the ellisisland.org website and his town of origin islisted as "P. Bugiana"
