Marriage- Divorce Document Translations

Does NY Consulate require translation of marriage license & certificate or just the certificate.

I also read on another post that a professional translator might be needed for divorce decrees. Is that the case?

I haven't heard of anyone using a marriage certificate as it usually doesn't have the information necessary, i.e. the parents names, etc... In most cases the marriage license application is what is necessary. I didn't even bother to get marriage certificates. As for translations, depends on your consulate. The Boston consulate doesn't require translations for documents in their own jurisdiction, is what I have been told, but other jurisdiction documents, including marriage/divorce decrees need to be translated.

Some consulates like Philly don't require an "approved" translator and you can do it yourself. They only require that the translation be correct and true. I have read that LA requires certain translators, and has an "approved/certified" list. I am not sure about NY, best to ask the consulate.

I have been in the application process for about 8 months so far, and regarding marriage certificates, divorce papers and translations, I have discovered the following:

At the Washington DC embassy and at the Boston consulate, marriage and divorce papers were necessary. In DC, all documents must be translated into Italian - but not by any particular translators, just as long as they are "done well," according to the woman in the Stato Civile office I spoke with.

At the Boston consulate (I was there last week), only documentation pertaining to divorce need to be translated into Italian, and this must be performed by one the of the consulate's approved/recommended translators. (According to the man I spoke with, I unfortunately don't remember his name, all divorce documents regardless from where they originate must be translated) Additionally, for divorce papers, they require the initial papers filed for divorce, the divorce nisi documents, and the complete divorce statement issued 6 months after the judgement. And as I'm sure you all know, they need to be apostilled.

I guess I have 'certificate' stuck in the head as far as translations go.

Your right Mule' about the information pertained on the marriage license. But just because you have a license doesn't mean you got married. The marriage certificate proves the actual marriage took place.To play it safe I'll translate both.

Good point, that is correct. On a few of my marriage license applications, there is a spot they fill in after the ceremony to note the actual date of the marriage and not just the license request so it has both dates and would be proof enough of the marriage. I have zero marriage certificates that I will present next week. I hope they are not necessary.

Did you have to have a cert of appeal for your divorce also translated?
