Degirolamo and Granitieri surnames
Looking for Degirolamo and Granitieri surnames from Fogia. Any info/leads appreciated. Thanks.
Re: Degirolamo and Granitieri surnames
Welcome to the Forum
!
We would be happy to help.
Are you looking for US or Italian records or both?
For US records we would need a bit more information, names, approx birth dates, locations, etc.
For Italian records you'll need to know the comune that these folks came from in Foggia.
Thank you, vj

Re: Degirolamo and Granitieri surnames
In Italy records and documents are in the city, town or even small village of origin.....births,marriages, deaths which I presume you know. When you say Foggia thats a provincial capital and may not be the place to obtain records for the majority of peersons making inquiires.
Go to http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwi ... tters.html to write for any document you wish free of charge
Most places of origin are on micorfilm at your nearest Mormon church familyhistory library (www.familysearch.org) where you can rent out the microfilm and trace your family back to 1809.
You can also go to www.paginebianche.it for the townof origin telephone directory. first line name, second line origin town and then click CERCA for full names, addresses and telephone numbers. =Peter=

Re: Degirolamo and Granitieri surnames
Thanks for your replies.
I started with my Father's mother and father - Nicholas DeGelorm and Mary Granteed.
Looking for both US and Italian records.
RE: Degirolamo
The town in Foggia is Serracapriola (G-grandfather Luigi DeGelorm spelled it Terrae Apriala) as far as I can tell from his WWII draft registration card. He was born in this city on Jan 2, 1881, again according to the WWII draft registration card. He lists his wife as Mrs. DeGelorm, and that is not helpful to me.
When they came to the USA they settled in Hughestown, Luzerne, PA. Most of the Granteed are in the Pittston, Scranton area of PA. The DeGelorm's moved to Syracuse, NY later.
I haven't found them at Ellis Island because I'm not sure what name they came in under - as you know the names were changed or shortened at the point of entry or maybe even when they got on the ship. I have no idea if he came alone or with his wife and any children.
RE: Granitieri
The name was shortened to Granted and then to Granteed, as far as I can tell. I don't have any birth dates, marriage dates, entry dates. Have been researching in ancestry.com, rootsweb.com, AGBI, SSDI, even the Ellis Island database for most of what I have. It comes in bits and pieces and is difficult because the names have been anglisized or changed completely.
I have not found anything on these names in the mormon database.
Thanks for your help. I'll check out some of the links you've posted.

Hello Cynthia!lafemmeamrcn wrote: How did you find all this information on DeGelorms and Granitieri's?
All of the records are from ancestry (manifests from Ellis Island)
One record lead to another starting with your information and Nicholas and Mary on the 1930 census.
Since both surnames were hard to find, I searched using first names and approximate birth dates in Luzerne County.
The naturalization records were found after the 1920 census stated that Luigi was naturalized abt 1911. I searched directly in the Ancestry. com. U.S. Naturalization Records - Original Documents, 1795-1972 database for "Luigi" born 1881 +/- 1 year in Pennsylvania.
