Mario & Carmela Severino

I need help locating more information about my Italian heritage and ancestors. My Great-Grandfather's name was Mario (b. Aug 31, 1890) (d.Akron, Ohio 1979). My Great-Grandmother's name was Carmela Severino (maiden name Shabica) (b. Oct 6, 1891) (d. Akron, Ohio 1986). I think my great grandfather's brothers name was Mike, but I am not sure and I do not know their parents names. I do know that they lived in the Provence of Casteltermini, Sicily and my great-grandfather came to America on a ship from the port of Palermo and arrived at Ellis Island. While in Sicily, they had my great Aunt Connie (Concetta) and both her and my great-grandmother came over to America when she was a year old. I would love to find out more information about Nana & Nano and who their parents were and even where they lived. I know the history after they got to America, as their children were my Great Aunts and Uncle.

I cannot even begin to express the joy and appreciation from both you you...Totonno and suanj...I literally cried when I logged on here this morning... (it is 11:43 am here in Ohio)...I have longed to know the background of my Nana and Nano for years and to learn more about my Italian heritage. It's so hard when your family keeps "secrets" throughout the generations, and you only get "bits and pieces" here and there. I am 41 years old and have had to wait what seems like an eternity to finally have this treasured information. I am an avid scrapbooker and am the only one in my family who is even interested in heritage. I know that my two girls will someday be able to look back on the ancestry and feel as proud to be Italian as I do this very moment. I am glad to have found you new friends in Italia...and again, words are just not enough..so Thank You

The information that was provided earlier is correct. My great grandmother's name is Carmela Sciabica, whose father was Vincenzo. My great grandfather is Mario and his brother is Pasquale. I know that he left for America from the port of Palermo and my great Aunt Concetta was 1 when her and my Nana set sail to meet my great grandfather. There were 3 towns mentioned:

Castellermini, Girgenti
Castellerini, Sicily
Casteltermini

Are these one and the same or three seperate towns? I am also interested in knowing who Vincenzo Sciabica's wife was, and I think my great grandmother Carmela had a sister too because I remember calling a great Aunt "Pepina", and my grandma telling me that she was my great grandmother's sister. I also do not know either of my great grandfather Mario's parents names. Can you be of assistance further please?

I believe the correct Towns is Casteltermini, which is part of the Agrigento (once called Girgenti) Province, which is part of the Sicily Region.

I feel somehow on this forum that I am somehow "home with my people"...everyone has been so willing to help and the speed at which people are able to answer astounds me...sometimes in America, you play the "waiting game with bureucratic red tape" to coin a phrase because no one is willing to help you find the information that you need. Hi.....it is the sicilian Flag the three legged woman is called the trinacria. From what legend states. One of the original explorers of Sicily thought the three points of the island were as beautiful as the legs of a woman.

Flag of Kingdom of SicilyThe flag of Sicily was first adopted in 1282, after the Sicilian Vespers of Palermo. It is characterized by the presence of the triskelion (trinacria) in its middle, the (winged) head of Medusa and three wheat ears. The three bent legs are supposed to represent the three points of the island Sicily itself.

The colours, instead, respectively represent the cities of Palermo and Corleone, at those times an agricultural city of renown. Palermo and Corleone were the first two cities to found a confederation against the Angevin rule. It finally became the official public flag of the Autonomous Region of Sicily in January 2000, after the passing of an apposite law which advocates its use on public buildings, schools, city halls, and all the other places in which Sicily is represented.

The flag looks somewhat similar to the flag of the Isle of Man, especially for the use of the triskelion in both of these; today, the triskelion (or trisceli) is also widely considered the actual symbol of Sicily. The symbol is also known as the trinacria, which is also an ancient name of Sicily. The name was also revived and used during the Aragonese period of the Kingdom of Sicily immediately after the Sicilian Vespers which ended Angevin rule.
