Genovese/LaMagna

Post by dsluvsms »

Good morning,
I am a novice family researcher hoping to learn more about my family. I know my grandparents and great grandparents but from there I am stuck and not sure of what to do next. Any tips or hints would be appreciated.
Here is some basics in the hope that this sounds familiar to someone and a connection can be made.
Grandfather-John Genovese-1923-1993 Parents Emilio Genovese (10/26/1895 Salerno-1949-Brooklyn NY) & Maria Buonfierio (spelling questionable 1903 Venice-1982 Long Island, NY)
Grandmother-Josephine LaMagna 1931-1998 Parents Thomas Gaetano LaMagna (12/19/00 Parma-05/05/62-Brooklyn, NY) and Maria Teresa DiPalma (10/15/00 Naples-10/26/62 Brooklyn, NY)
I can't seem to find manifests showing anyone coming over from Italy from either side. Or how to proceed researching records from Italy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance
Deanna

I see Emilio Genovese and wife on a passenger list for The Madonna dated May 11, 1920. Their names are crossed out, but you can see that their last place of residence is given as S. Cecilia. He is on line 8 of the manifest and she is on the next line. Easier to view this record through the website www.stevemorse.org. Go down to the third option which is the gold form and type in the name Emilio Genovese. He is the last Emilio listed born in 1895. Father Giovanni Genovese 304 3rd Avenue Bklyn. Nearest relative in S Cecilia was Antonio Manzi. Not sure of the spelling of wife's maiden name on the manifest.

Before you can attempt to get information from Italy, you need to gather as much information as you can about your ancestors here in the U.S. So you need to find them on as many U.S. documents as you can.

Thanks! That is a match! Do you know why their names would be crossed out?

I see they are also crossed off the passenger list dated May 3, 1920. I can clearly see her maiden name on that list as being Bonfieri. That ship was the SS Canada which departed from Naples. The father Giovanni was at the same address in Brooklyn. You will have to search for a manifest later than the May 3rd and May 11th one, as there must have been a change in plans and they must have arrived at a later date.

They are also crossed off of another passenger list The Canada June 25, 1920. On this passenger list though I can see that the grandfather in the town of S. Egilia (may be a misspelling of the S Cecelia from the other manifests) was Antonio Manzo. So Manzo must have been the mother's maiden name.

I see him on an earlier manifest in 1909 from the town of S Egidio. He was age 13, his father Giovanni and mother were in Brooklyn. Jan 7, 1909 The Germania line 30.

This is why I told you to search the passenger lists through www.stevemorse.org. You can do a sound search of both the first and last names and get additional possibilities.

Thank you all very much! Its a good start. Now I just have to figure out why Emilio traveled back and forth so much and/or why they were listed and crossed off so many times?
Very helpful. Thank you!
