Re: What can i expect from FHL?
I have been using the Newtown FHC for the last 6 months or so. They must have upgraded the equipment since you were last there....they have multiple lenses, an "electronic" viewer and a PC connection to scan/print images directly from the viewer. The volunteers are very helpful.

Re: What can i expect from FHL?
I was last in Newtown FHC perhaps two (?) years ago. At that time, all of the microfilm viewers were of 1960's vintage (if not that old, then certainly that technology - I have seen it before), and the only "output" available was a pair of separate printers. You took the film from the viewer, careful to hold your place, and then put it into the printer unit. Once you got it lined up again, you selected from one of two (maybe three?) fixed zoom lenses, adjusted the focus as best you could and pressed the Print button.
What came out - for each one I tried - was pretty much illegible.

Re: What can i expect from FHL?
I bring my camera, shut the flash off, put it on macro, take different size pictures. been doing this for 3 years. My FHC has the oldest readers ever!
Re: What can i expect from FHL?
my camera has document mode....still struggling to get good ones with it ...the attendant takes pics with her camera....and transfers it to my flash drive....
so i end up with something....
i just assumed that they would have top notch equipment....

Re: What can i expect from FHL?
the director at my center said you have to have a certain amount of film orders and people each week at your center to get a good reader, one that has a scanner, email etc. I know Brooklyn has a new machine and it cost 6K.
Re: What can i expect from FHL?
That makes sense. I am fortunate to live reasonably close to Bloomfield which enjoys sufficient film orders and people every week. Their current problem is finding sufficient volunteer librarians to cover the hours that they are open. I hope they don't have to cut back. I have too many films to view.
Good luck at your LDS center.

Re: What can i expect from FHL?
Hi, guys. Question. Do you have to order the records by years. I went to my Center today to get Marcianise records, and they said I could order 1850-1852 records for $5.00. I was thinking I would get 1809-1929 for $5.00. I ordered the 1850-1852 for my great X3 grandfather's birth record, but now I'll have to wait till those get here to order more, and then wait another 2-3 weeks. Is this how it works? If so, that's fine, I was just wondering if it normally works this way.

Re: What can i expect from FHL?
When you look at the index of available films for your town, it should provide you a reasonably accurate list of what info is available on each film. The amount of info on any film is usually determined by the size of the documents it contains and the size of the town you are researching.
A film with Allegati registers will not contain as many records as one with mostly mortis. There may even be record groups split between 2 films. Don't assume any one level of consistency. While you may wonder why certain records are grouped together, remember, they may contain the most valuable resource you can find in your research. I am married to my films at the present time.
You will find yourself hating and loving some of the recorders of information on these documents. The handwriting can drive you crazy at times. The films will still be your best portal into the past.
Good luck on your adventure.

Re: What can i expect from FHL?
That's pretty much it, although you can certainly order more than one film at a time if you wish to do so. The fee is per film, so if you ordered five films all at once, you would pay $25. As you can see from the list below, there are a large number of films vailable for Marcianise; reviewing all of them would easily cost an arm and a leg.Squigy wrote:Hi, guys. Question. Frankly, I think it is time for the Mormons to cut a deal with Ancestry . com to make these films availble for viewing online...

Re: What can i expect from FHL?
The only problem is, I only know Angelo (my grandfather's) year of birth, which is 1850, I don't know his father's birth year. So I have to wait till I get the records to see his age, and then order his father's records.johnnyonthespot wrote:That's pretty much it, although you can certainly order more than one film at a time if you wish to do so. @Jim:
Thank you for the advice. I was sort of worried about not being able to understand them. If I have trouble understanding the record, I'll post it on here and ask for help translating

Re: What can i expect from FHL?
Is it normal to come across a small index of 15ish names that have no record either backwards or forwards on a reel?
I came across this the other day...and one of the names on it is one i am investigating....it had a really high index number...but i couldn't find where the actual record was.....
this small index was all mixed names (like not an index for say letter G)...
i just thought it was weird....
if anyone has suggestions...i am going back on Weds to order more film...so i will be taking a look at this reel again...

Re: What can i expect from FHL?
I ran into a small index this morning, but i believe it encompassed the following records. I had no need for it because the records on this film were so clear to view (a blessing when it happens).
Sometimes I find small groups of records that don't seem to belong and they are sometimes for a different town. This is not the norm, but does happen. I suppose when sorting the millions of records the mormons index, mistakes can happen. I am just so pleased to have access to the records I need, I just discount these idiosyncrasies. Normally, the films are reasonably logical.
Good luck on your adventure.
