Montera in Calabria...

Post by Jayson684 »

Am working off of family notes/stories...
Have verified Gaetano Montera.
Now on to his parents: Francesco and Rosina (nee Gagliardi), circa 1852-1887 / 1869, in Calabria Citra.
Where might I contact to verify this and other information?
Thanks for the site, folks... :D

Welcome to the Forum!!

Calabria is not specific enough to know where to contact. Perhaps you know his town of origin?
My Italian surnames:

Caserta: Maietta, Rossano, Tessitore, Negro, Peluso, Musone

Campobasso: D'Andrea, Barile

Catanzaro: Fiorelli/Fiorillo, Romito

Welcome Jayson684! :-)

Malito is in Cosenza Province in the Calabria Region. Was Gaetano born in Italy?

You can write directly to the comune and request the birth/marriage records for your relatives. It is best to have at least the correct year of birth, as well as their names. Parents' names help.

Here is the address in Malito:

Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Piazza P. Mancini
87030 Malito (CS)
ITALY

And a site to generate the letter in Italian.

Is this 1920 census correct for your ancestors?

from the site Ancestry.com

1920 United States Federal Census
about Guy Montero
Name: Guy Montero
Home in 1920: Delagua, Las Animas, Colorado
Age: 24
Estimated birth year: abt 1896
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Self (Head)
[Head]
Spouse's name: Mary
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Sex: Male
Home owned: Rent
Year of Immigration: 1912
Able to read: Yes
Able to Write: Yes
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Guy Montero 24 head, born in IT, naturalized
Mary Montero 20 wife, born in IT
Frank Montero 3 son, born in CO
[3 10/12]
Pete Montero 1 son, born in CO
[1 9/12]

Then this record could have been his father's:

from the free site of the State Archive of Cosenza:
http://poster.beniculturali.it/MW/index.php?en/1/home

to search the records you'll need to register...

Person
Name: montera francesco
Gender: M
Place of Birth: malito

Date of birth: 30/11/1851
Related document: recluta (tipo atto Leva) Vedi atto
Codice SIAS IT-ASCS-F680258

It is possible that Guy named his two first sons Frank (after his father) and Pete (maybe after his Grandfahter)

I would advise you to follow the advise of Tessa :D requesting for example Francesco Montera's "Estratto per copia integrale dell'Atto di Nascita" using the date 30 november 1851... on the document you'll find also the marriage annotation with the bride's name...

Do you know Gaetano's birth date?

yes, the 1920 info is correct and of the same family.

not sure of the circumstances, but guy was born in brazil (1930 census shows this, even though his passenger list states Malito, IT), then moving back to italy.
i say back to, because that is where the rest of the family is. i am looking for his parents and further...

i have a few generations worth of notes, so i will be contacting that address someone graciously provided me with...

Jay,

Please contact me. My family is also from Malito and I have both Montera's and Gagliardi's in my tree. You may be able to trace the families further back by using the following site which was extracted from the microfilms of Malito by Renata Gagliardi:
