LOOKING .....SAN GIOVANNI IN FIORE

My husband's grandparents were both born in San Giovanni In Fiore - we are off to SGIF in a week and I was wondering if anyone knows how we can perhaps trace back where they lived or any other relatives while we are there? Anyone we should see there that can help? My husband's last name is OLIVERIO. Thanks! Inge Oliverio

In the current white pages for the town, there are 180 listings for the surname Oliverio. If there were only a few, you might be able to contact them to see if they are somehow connected to the ancestry, but with that many, I don't know what to suggest to you concerning using the local white pages.

The other thing I will check on is the names of the parishes in the town. You would have to somehow contact the priest in advance though. In many towns in Italy, priests administer to more than one parish and some do not even reside in the same town. So you can't just go up to the rectory or church and ring the bell and expect to get help about your ancestry. I'll check to see if I can find what parishes are in the town and how many there are.

Even if you choose to go to the local registry or anagrafe office there, you will need some specific information about your ancestry to get information and you may even need to speak the local dialect to get assistance.

I was going to suggest that you enjoy your vacation and try to do the research when you return. Believe it or not, it is easier to do the research from here than while in Italy. I am still looking for the name of the local parish, but nothing comes up when I search for it in the Italian yellow pages. So the town is possibly administered by a church outside of its limits.

There are a number of entries for individuals from the town with that surname. Possibly some of these are connected to your ancestry.
