Donata / Nigro

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Thank you. Seems that Fedele was also married in Italy to Molly. Do you know when he married Molly? Did he come to the US with Molly? Did Molly die? He married Mary Donata (aka Carmelo Dinardo) in Milford, Mass; divorced her and married Annina Dieso (can't find any records on Annina or her brother Vincenzo).

Hello Donna!

My best guess,
Molly was probably a nickname for Carmela
According to the 1900 census Fedele and Molly were only married one year - that would match the marriage record from Milford.
His 1899 marriage record indicated it was his first marriage.

We'll be happy to look for Annina

Molly/Carmela may have died in childbirth. The timing would be about right and maternal death was a huge problem back then, even in the relatively "civilized" United States:
The historical level of maternal deaths is probably around 1 in 100 births. Mortality rates reached very high levels in maternity institutions in the 1800s, sometimes climbing to 40 percent of birthgiving women. At the beginning of the 1900s, maternal death rates were around 1 in 100 for live births

I am confused. Molly Negro is not the same person as Carmela Dinardo - correct? So when Fedele came to Milford, he married Carmela Dinardo (aka Mary Donata)??? Did Fedele have a brother Michele? My father told me about a Michele. Fedele's grandparents were Angelo Nigro and Maria Michela Russo. Do you have birth dates for Angelo and Maria?

Thank you.

Yes, Annina Dieso is my grandmother. Fedele was divorced from Mary Donata -- he raised two daughters from this marriage. Mary Donata moved to Vermont -- not sure if she ever remarried.

Annina Dieso and her brother, Vincenzo and parents are nowhere to be found in any ship records. So I do not know how and when they came to the US.

I know that Fedele had a sister Savina who married Frank Filosa. But not sure how many more siblings he had...we know of Felice and Carmelo and Michele (not sure if Michele married....I think he went back to Italy and died there.

Donna
Thank you for the update :D

One of the reason's Annina and her brother Vincenzo may be so hard to find is their surname
It's difficult to figure out the original spelling
For example
Nigro Umberto Milford 1915 630 433 Birth
On Umberto Nigro's birth record Annina's surname is spelled D'Esa

It appears that Fedele may have had a brother Michele
On the FamilySearch Pilot site: http://search.labs.familysearch.org/rec ... html#start
If you do a record search for
Surname: Nigro
Place: Milford, Worcester, Massachusetts, United States
You should find quite a few records for your family including a Michele
(The databases for MA aren't complete yet)

As soon as we figure out the correct surname spelling, if they came to the US we should be able to find them
