Name: James Festa
Home in 1930: Brooklyn, Kings, New York
View Map
Age: 20
Estimated birth year: abt 1910
Relation to Head of House: Son
Father's Name: Vincent
Mother's Name: Mariann
Race: White
If so, his father Vincenzo immigrated in 1893 and he immigrated around 1911.
2nd marriage is probably right, the 1930 census puts him at age 23 for first marriage and his wife at age 30 for first marriage...Since he is 69 and she is 50...good guess this is his second
BTW - Who do you think brought 1 year old Vincenzo Jr. (James) over in 1911?
Could this possibly be him?

James sister Filomena born in NJ?

Gina,
Check out this manifest. Only problem is that they were going to Delaware. What do you think?
Wow! That was one of the manifests I was studying too. But, I did not have the census and was not sure. All the information looks right! Thank you both so very much!!!!

They do make a great tag team! Lucky for me! On the manifest there is a Marianna Ciciola or Ciociola, maybe this is Mariann?
Tessa78"]Did anyone catch on the 1912 manifest that Vincenzo Jr. (age 2) was born in Wilmington, Delaware?
I noticed this and that's why I had doubted the information earlier.
And that Marianna Ciciola had been in US in 09?
The two passengers listed, then crossed out (Umberto and Filomena) were also children of Vincenzo and Marianna, right?
T.
Did not notice she was in the US in 09, will have to research that. On the census, Filomena is listed, but not Umberto. Maybe he moved out to start his own family then.
That name Roca come up on Marianna manifest. Closest relative in Avellino is Luigi Roca.
I think they are probably from the town of Avellino because no other town is mentioned in any of the manifests and Festa is the 2nd most common name in the town of Avellino.

I also, read something about Candida, Avellino.
Here is an interesting manifest from 1927 for James Festa...born in US.
Age is right - working as a radio operator on the US Vessel "Inspector"
If this is him, could be more verification that he was born in USA..
Finding a record of service would help. Especially if discharged before 1930 since he is on the census with parents in 1930.

This manifest shows Marianna and children ,Vincenzo, Filomena, & Umberto arriving in 1912. The census says he was born in Italy. My guess is Candida, Avellino. What do you think?
There has been a strong custom in Italy that determines how children are named: The first male is named after his paternal grandfather. The second male is named after his maternal grandfather. The first female is named after her paternal grandmother. The second female is named after her maternal grandm...
