Questions about 1811 birth record
I'd be grateful for help in understanding parts of this foundling birth record. In the index, Maria Rosa is the fifth name down in the far left column. In the very next column, where parents' names are usually written, I can only read:
Giuseppe del Campo,
testimonio che _?_ di _?_
Please correct the middle two paragraphs for me and I have some questions:
ed ha presentato una bambina di sesso [femminile nata]
ed ore [non _?_ ] del giorno [non _?_ ] del mese [suddetto
ritrovata nel convento di San Matteo, e battezzata de
gli é imposta nome
~Maria Rosa~]
Ed essendosene fatta, e sottoscritta la formale dichiarazione
la nostra presenza, e de' testimonj, che sono [Francesco Paolo
la Porta di anni trenta, professione speciale manuale, (Is the occupation a "special manual laborer"?)
domiciliante in detta Comune Strata Purgatorio, e Pietro (Could that really be the street name?)
Thank you very much for your help!

"testimonio che ha dichiarato"
See the same person and phrase for birth #232...
For the time and day - could be "non si là " - (not there)
And it does look like the first profession is special manual laborer and the second profession looks like it reads "esattore", but don't know...
Last blanks may read "ed alla persona che li ha condotta..."

Thank you, Tessa78! I really appreciate your input.
The occupation Lattaio means Dairyman, but on the document it didn't seem to be exactly that word.

I'm still thinking it's "esattore" - a collector (like taxes, etc.)

Esattore looks like the word! Thank you!
Yes, I know, it's an unfortunate name for a street. I couldn't believe it.

If you mean, have I been on the road to hell, then yes - more than a few times.Tessa78 wrote:Hi there Carmine!

Google maps has only a single Strada Purgatorio in all of Italy; it is in Ostellato Ferrara in Emilia Romagna. A relatively short road, running through some beautiful farmland. Deosn't look particularly hellish to me. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Strada+Pu ... 1&t=h&z=15

Re: Questions about 1811 birth record
I actually have a 4th great grandmother who died on via Purgatorio in the town of Menfi in Agrigento Province, Sicily, in 1865. The street must have been renamed, as it does not appear in a current street map for the town. I too was shocked when I first saw that street name in a record, particularly in a death record.

Re: Questions about 1811 birth record
Is the street so named as a reference to one of Dante's books? He wrote the books Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.
Dante, however, was from Florence. He was born in 1265.

Re: Questions about 1811 birth record
I really have no idea. I just know that some streets were named for prominent families in a town or region, or for prominent political figures; others had saint's names, etc.
Here's a cute article I came across on the internet about funny Italian street names. You may have seen this:
