Cirino family

Post by gmnewlook »

Hi there,

I'm new here. My name is Martin Cirino, I live in Montreal, Quebec and I am looking for info on my family roots. My wife and I are doing our family trees through ancestry.ca. My grandfather Antonio Cirino (1915-1983) came to Canada with his parents, Domenico Cirino (1874-1953) and Teresa Manocchio (1878-1953) in 1919. He married Thérèse Pagé at St-Arsène church in Montreal in 1938 and had three children (Pauline, b. 13-3-1939, my father, André, b. 27-7-1940 and Claude, b. 30-6-1941). Only my aunt and my father survived, Claude must have died when he was a baby, because neither my father or my aunt remember him.

My father married my mother, Denise Baron on May 10, 1969 and I was born Jan. 1st, 1972. I had my first daugther, Rose on July 9, 2002 with my ex, Martin Durand (we seperated in Sept. 2003) and married my wife Nathalie L'Écuyer on May 19, 2007, and our daugther Anne was born on April 28, 2008.

In my ancestry hints (leaves), it says that Domenico's father's name was Giuseppe and that he was born in 1857. It only shows his mother's first name, Giovanna. Teresa's parent's names, I got by accessing her brother's marriage certificate on ancestry.ca's copies of the Drouin Collection of Quebec church recors from 1620 to 1967. His name was Carmine Manocchio and he married Benedetta Todoro at Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel church in Montreal on Oct. 11, 1915.

My grandfather also had a brother, Andrea (13-6-1912 - 4-9-1976) he was married to Assunta Piacente (17-3-1911 - 11-3-1985).

How can I go further in my research in my family tree and find out more about my ancestors? I was able to go as far back as the late 1500s, early 1600s for some branches of the family (Baron, Pagé, Gravel, etc), why can't I do the same for the Cirino side?

Please help!!! 8O

Thank you...

If you go to www.familysearch.org under ancestor search put in Cirino and you will noticve that the Cirinoi surname extends back to the 1700's in Sicily and Brazil in a few listings. Rather than go on further perhaps youmight wish to dfigest this information and thenget back to discuss its posible Spanish/portuguese roots.=Peter=

Thanks,

Actually, if I remember correctly, my father did tell me that before being in Italy, the Cirinos or maybe Cirinoi came from Spain.

I'll check it out.

My mother's maiden name was Cirino, changed to Cerino in Ellis Island. Her father's name was Carissime Antonio. The family came to the US from Castel Vetere Su Calore, a village near Avellino. Mio nonno had an older sister named Giovannina, a younger brother named Salvatore, and two other sisters, Angelina, and Maria. Salvatore died before he married. My grandparents came to the USA in the early 1900s and then returned to Italy. They, and their children came back to the USA in the early 1920s, after Mussolini came to power. My mother's name was Luigia(Louise), her older brother was Francesco, her younger brother Giuseppe, and younger sister Maria Grazia. Maybe same of these names are common to your family. When my uncle Joe died, a Giusseppe Cirino showed up at his wake. He was a cousin to my grandfather, he said, and his family emigrated to one of the mountain states, Colorado I think.

The Giusseppe you mention that showed up at your uncle's wake, do you know or can you find out where he was living at the time?

gmnewlook, Like you, I didn't know what a Family History Center was a week ago. I googled it and found one only 5 minutes from my home. I never knew it existed. It's a library within the Mormon church. I found the volunteers staffing it to be very welcoming and helpful. Good luck in your search.
