San Martino Valle Caudina, Avellino, Campania

Post by DebiHarbuck »

Looking for information about the commune of San Martino Valle Caudina, Avellino, Campania.

I am researching the family of Antonio Pisano and his wife, Filomena Barbato who came to the US in 1911 from San Martino V.C. to join their three sons, Constantino, Crio, and Luigi in NYC. So far, information on the internet regarding San Martino V.C. is very limited and any details about it's history, traditional industry/agriculture, emigration patterns, etc. would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome :-)

Here are some links that may provide additional info...
The first is the most comprehensive (the town's official site) but is in Italian, so you'll need to use a page translator...

I appreciate it, Tessa. Do you know of any good books that might have more info?

Not off-hand, but I suggest you look for books about Avellino...

There are some comprehensive books about the History of Italy that may shed some light on these areas...but maybe not as precise as you want...

Maybe someone else can offer suggestions...

If you can get it in a translated version (this one is in French) there is a book on Amazon about the area...

Hi Debi--I too am researching my Pisano ancestors in San Martino VC. As it happens, just today I ordered microfilms of the civil archives from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. When I receive them in a couple of weeks ago, while I'm looking for mine I could look up yours too--who knows, maybe at some point they'll become "ours"! Do you have any other information that would help me recognize what I'm looking for?

Best,
Paul Pisano

PS Rereading your message, it looks like you're looking for more larger-picture information, while I'm still looking for names, dates, etc. So perhaps what I find won't be so useful to you, but let me know if you think it might be. :)

PPS In the first message it should of course say "a couple of weeks," not "a couple of weeks ago"--excuse my sloppy editing!

Paul, thanks so much for the offer of help! I can tell you what I know so far (which, before their immigration to the US is, well, nothing), and if you should come across this family while you are searching, I'd love to know more.

Antonio Pisano (b. ca 1850) & his wife Filomena Barabato (b ca. 1853) immigrated to NYC in 1911 from San Martino Valle Caudina. They were stowaways on board the San Guglielmo; their daughter Teresina (b. 1887) was also a passenger on this same voyage. All were joining their sons/brothers Consantino (b. 1882), Ciro (b. 1892), and Luigi (b. 1896) who were already in NYC.

I do not know who Antonio and/or Filomena's parents were; nor do I know if they had other children. I do info about these four children and their families that I'd be happy to share.
