NYC or NJ Birth Documentation - Mary Longo

Post by JLDeLuca »

Does anyone have tips for zeroing in on the correct borough for requesting birth certificates? My grandmother, Mary Longo (maiden name) was born in NYC or NJ in 1903 before the family left for Pueblo, CO. I think they lived with family in NYC for up to a year before leaving for Pueblo (earlier string showed them in Pueblo for the 1910 census, and her sisters being born there in 1905).
Thanks!

The 1910 census, which you apparently already have, should show her place of birth (state or country) and parent's places of birth.

That information should at the least put you in New York or in New Jersey, and we can proceed from there.

At this site www.italiangen.org

Longo Mary G Jul 29 1901 13773 Kings

Certificate # is 13773 and borough is Kings (Brooklyn)

IF this is your Mary Longo, you can request the record online...
http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/vi ... irth.shtml

However, you should follow Carmine's good advice and try to narrow it down to NY or NJ. :-)

I'm looking at the 1910 census for this Longo family in Pueblo Colorado, and it's showing Maria being 7 years old and born in NY.

Unfortunately, "Mary Longo" is only a little less common a name as is "Mary Smith"...

It may be best to request a search by New York City Vital Records giving them the approximate year of birth (apparently 1903), and her parent's names. See http://www.nyc.gov/dorforms/birth.jsp for NYC births before 1910.

I was just looking on the family search beta site to see if they have the info for the parents of the 1901 birth that T found, but it's not there. I would agree with Carmine that you might do better having NYC do the search rather than just ordering a certificate which may not be for her.

Thanks, all. Maestra36 is correct with the 1903 birthdate and I believe it is NYC so will try the search that Carmine suggested. Appreciate the help!
