Laraio - 1900 census
Re: Laraio - 1900 census
One other thing concerning the Province of Matera vs the Province of Potenza.
The Basilicata region is composed of the two provinces above. My ancestors from the town of Stigliano, in Matera Province, said they were from Potenza. Potenza even appears on my paternal grandmother's Manhattan marriage record as her place of birth despite the fact that she was born in Stigliano in the province of Matera. It is my understanding that, as some point, the town of Stigliano was part of Potenza Province. I have never seen evidence of this though in the Stigliano records. I am thinking the same might be true of Accettura. Possibly at some point, in the early 1900s, both Accettura and Stigliano, now in Matera Province, were considered parts of Potenza province. I do know, from my study of the microfilmed records for the town of Stigliano, that there was a time when the province listed in the records was Basilicata, now the region in which both towns are found.

Re: Laraio - 1900 census
Since you have an exact date of birth, I would try to get a copy of the birth record directly from the town of Accettura, Annette. I have to look up the address for you.
Re: Laraio - 1900 census
I have exact date, based on Joseph's WW I draft record. So I hope he remembered correctly! Thanks!

Nati 1872, Salandra - Tursi Nati 1873 Accettura - Tursi Nati 1874 Accettura - Ferrandina FHL INTL Film # 1659804
This is the microfilm that would have the births for Accettura for 1873 and 1874. As you can see, the births for 1872 on this roll of microfilm begin with the town of Salandra, so the 1872 birth records for Accettura are not on this roll of microfilm. The towns are listed in alphabetical order on these province microfilms, but the years are separated on the film.

Re: Laraio - 1900 census
Which would be quicker and/or easier? Writing to Italy or requesting the films? I am assuming they are films I would request from the Family History Center? Are there indexes or would I just look for the date? Another advantage of getting the films is finding other ancestors/relatives. I think I will do both.
Thanks, Annette

Re: Laraio - 1900 census
about the surname Sarricchio-this could be a surname from Accettura as well.
go to www.stevemorse.org and then use the first option which is the gold form to access the ellis island passenger lists. You can put in the first letter of the last name and the town name and get a list of everyone who came through ellis island from the town whose last name started with S. You can also put in the surname and do a sound search of both it and the town name and get even more possibilities.

The films can be very difficult to do. The Accettura records have a lot of processetti which are basically marriage packages. If the couple married in Accettura, you might find the marriage record package and it may have extracted copies of their birth records, along with copies of the death records of any parents and sometimes grandparents who were not alive when they married. However, you don't always get all those records, and sometimes there are no cover sheets between the records for one couple and the records for the next couple on the microfilm. So those kinds of microfilm can be very difficult to do, but you may get lucky and the records for your town may be in good shape. You just never know until you rent a roll of microfilm. Normally, unless a microfilm is on backorder, it only takes 2 to 3 weeks to be sent to your local center once you go there in person, place the order, and pay for it. The price for rental of the film, which is sent to your center for about a month, is about $5.50. My center is currently charging that amount, but the price can vary from local center to center. Some add in 50 cents for a phone call to you once the microfilm arrives from Salt Lake City.
You can search the library catalog at www.familysearch.org and put in Accettura in the top box and Italy in the bottom. If you have trouble with accessing the list of microfilms for the town, either I or someone else on this forum will walk you through it. The volunteers at the local center can also walk you through it, they do not necessarily have experience with Italian microfilms.
Receiving a response via mail from Italy-it's hard to say. Supposedly there is a law in effect that a public office has 30 days to respond to a request, but some on this forum have waited in excess of 6 months and still not gotten a response. Some towns are better than others, so you just won't know until you send a request to them.

Re: Laraio - 1900 census
As to whether there are indexes on the films-not always, and sometimes when there are, they are not legible. Also, sometimes they are after the records for a particular year or sometimes in the middle, if there are a lot of records for a particular year. If you do decide to rent microfilm, take a hand held magnifying glass with you. Most centers only have one, or maybe two machines, that magnify the records. It depends on how large your local center is. You also may not be lucky enough to get on one of those machines that magnify the records. The records not magnified are very very tiny and extremely difficult on your eyes.
Re: Laraio - 1900 census
First, thanks for the Steve Morse Web site. I never knew you could do that search. I did look for S and Accettura with no luck for Teresa and Carmela. Since she may have been coming to Philadelphia to get married, my guess is she came through Philadelphia. I did find two Sarricchio's from Accettura, but they settled in NY. Rocco and Vito - her brothers, perhaps? Interestingly enough, she named two of her children Rocco and Vito! And...I bet Teresa was from Accettura as well.
Thanks for the info on the microfilm. I think I will order it and I will also send for the birth record. I have never been to a Family History Library and I don't know how to go about ordering. I have been on the pilot family search website though. I will take a look and reread your message and try and figure it out.
Thanks again - you all have been so helpful!

Re: Laraio - 1900 census
Just one more thing. You say the center by you is only open for two hours on a Wed night. You should go there and check it out and find out how crowded it gets and whether or not you'll actually be able to work on your microfilm for the full two hours. Two hours is not very much time for working with microfilm. You could do the Province roll of microfilm for the 1873 birth records really fast. You just need to learn to read the date in Italian, so review the words for the numbers or learn them if you don't know them. The records will be according to date, with record #1 being in January normally, that is, if there were any Jan births in the town for that year.
It takes time to learn to put the microfilm on the machine, but a volunteer there can help you with that. Different centers have different kinds of equipment.
Keep us posted and good luck.

Maestra36 - I am going to order the microfilm. I am going to leave a message on the FHL answering machine now and see how I can go about ordering it. They do have hours by appt in addition to their Wednesday night hours. Do I specifically request Film #1659804?maestra36 wrote:Nati 1872, Salandra - Tursi Nati 1873 Accettura - Tursi Nati 1874 Accettura - Ferrandina FHL INTL Film # 1659804

I thought in another message, you had said that Accettura was missing birth records from 1873. Or is that from another microfilm? Or maybe I am just confused?!
Thanks, Annette

Annette,
You have to go to the Family History Center to order films. They have a multi-part form which you fill out (one for each film or series of films) and turn in with the rental payment in cash. Then they will contact you (usually by phone) when the films arrive, typically in about two weeks.

The birth records for 1873 are supposed to be on the microfilm # that I gave you in my reply above, based on the description of the film in the family history library catalog. The only thing is that sometimes there are missing records from the microfilms, so there is always the possibility that the entire year is missing from the film. I have no way of knowing that. This particular roll of microfilm is your only hope for getting your ancestor's birth record off of microfilm. If you know how many siblings he had, and can estimate a year of marriage for his parents, you may be able to get their marriage processetti- from the town of Accettura microfilm. Locating their processetti could give you extracts of their birth records, extracts of death records for their parents, etc. Some processetti give you more records than others.
But you do have to go to your local center to order and pay for the microfilm, as I previously told you, and Carmine reiterated in his post above. Only those in other countries can currently order microfilm over the internet.
Keep us posted on how you make out.
