Migration from Marseille France to US Question

Post by djm1228 »

My grandparents, Serophino Manfredonia and Josephine Voleri, were married in Italy in 1880. They moved to Marseille, Frances before migrating to the US in June 1891. Since I don't know their exact birthdates or where they were born in Italy, I thought the birth records of the three children they had there might. Is it possible to get birth records for their children from France?

Would anyone know if migration records between Italy and France exist from that time period?

Can anyone shed some light on these two topics for me? :? :? :?

Thanks, Diane

about Eugene Manfredonia Name: Eugene Manfredonia

on the 1900 census the immigration year is wrong as a well the birthplace of some children...
however if is the right family, the birthplace must be Atripalda, almost for Eugenio( Eugene)..

Thanks! That is them. I was aware of most of that info except the town of Atripolda. I will find out how to write to that place to see if I can get records.

I appreciate your time.

Hi Diane,

I have done quite a bit of research on the town of Atripalda since that is where my ancestors are from.....I know I have seen Manfredonias on some of the civil records....I only remember the name because we had a Principal Manfredonia growing up and it stood out!

I may still have some of the birth record microfilms at my local history center. Do you want me to see if I can find any of the birth records? If you e-mail me (JoeViking@aol.com) a list of names/dates I will see what I still have/can find.

Good Luck!

Ciao,
Joe

It looks like Eugene was definitely born in Atripalda (May 27, 1881)....if this is him:

http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=Vi ... id=1305430

This birth date is different than the date listed above (Nov. 1880).....was his wife Tessie? I am guessing Yes.....Teresa Saldino.

Hi Joe, Thanks so much for your offer and reply to help me. Here's what I know.

Serofino Manfredonia (b 5/1856 in Italy d abt 1911 in NYC) married Giuseppe (eventually Josephine) Valerio(a) (b 4/1860 in Italy, d abt 1937 in NJ) in 1880. I'm assuming this was in Atripolda since that was where their first son Serafino (eventually Eugene) was born on May 27,1881. They then moved to Marseille France by May of 1884 when my Grandfather was born in. There was a sister born there also (Clohilda b 11/1889). They had their final three children in NYC starting in Nov 1892 (John, Edward and George).

I would like to know anything about Serofino and Giuseppe. I'm not even sure of the spelling of her last name since there is about 4 different spellings on various records. My father believes (he's 90) now that they must have migrated to France with other family members because his uncle Eugene often spoke of family from there. In fact, he may have even visited there with his son, Eugene a few times.

The records you show are for the family. Anthing else you can help me with is greatly appreciated. I'll also email this message to your email you gave me. Thanks, Diane

Hi Diane,

I was at the Family History Center last night and only have the microfilms of birth records until 1849. But, this looks like Serafino's death record/certificate # from NYC:

Manfredonia Serafino 49 y Nov 18 1910 Certificate # 22671 Kings

You can order a copy of this online from the NYC Vital Records Dept:

http://www.nyc.gov/dorforms/deathcert.jsp

This costs roughly $15/$20 and should show his age, maybe birth town (which we think is Atripalda anyway), parents, cause of death, etc.

Will let you know what else I find....hope this helps!

Ciao,
Joe

Hi - Thanks so much for the added information.

Just to help a newbie here....If I went to a local Family Center, they wouldn't have any info after 1849? I suppose if I went to view those, I could just search through the records for 'Manfredonia' and maybe I'd find other family members.

Thanks, Diane

Oh...they definitely would....I only have out on loan the birth records until 1849.....and they go back to 1809 so you might be able to find a couple of generations before Serafino/Giuseppa. Here is the film number which should have their particular birth registries:

Nati 1850-1865 Pubblicazioni 1810-1832 - FHL INTL Film [ 1448130 ]

And here is the list of Family History Centers:

https://library.beta.familysearch.org/

Shoot me an e-mail if you have any more questions. I also sent a message to someone who has access to the Atripalda records to see if he could find anything on Serafino/Giuseppa....will let you know!
