Re: Question to Embassy
I have written to a couple consulates in english. I doubt they care much honestly. I went through my mothers entire appointment in english and they were still pretty helpful. Really doubt they care. and for the most part I always got a response.
Re: Question to Embassy
It also depends somewhat on the Consulate. I've dealt with one official who spoke very good English; and another who didn't speak a word. Similarly, there are some officials who will respond to English correspondence in English, and others who will respond to English in Italian.

Mark, are you referring to a US consulate?gottogetit wrote:when asking a question to my local embassy(via e-mail) is it proper to ask in Italian or English. I do not speak or write italian(trying to learn now) and i do not want to offend anybody.

It is my understanding that all Italian consular employees who deal with the public are required to be able to read, write, and speak fluently the language which is common in the area to which they are assigned. You should not have any problems writing your email in English.

Thanks again all.
Re: Question to Embassy
Carmine is correct. Consulate personnel must be bi-lingual to be assigned overseas.
