WHY SOME ITALIANS HAVE AGE DISCREPANCY!

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Note also that many Italian birth records record the date on which the birth was registered with the comune, rather than the date on which the actual birth occurred.

This originates from the hand-written records of birth retained by the comunes (from which birth certificates are generated), which read something to the effect of: "on [date], [father] appeared before me and declared that his wife [name] gave birth to a son/daughter named [name]."

Thus, the birth date which appears on Italian birth certificates (which are generated from those hand-written records) often have a date which is a day or so after the person's actual birthdate. The Consulates are well-aware of this, and I've never heard of it causing a problem.

All the Italian birth records I have seen have the actual birth date lower down the act. The date at the top is the date the birth is registered but further down in the text you will find the actual date the child was born.

Because of my work in the earlier birth records of my family I have now gone back to each copy and reread them to make sure I have the dates correct.

I have found in many instances I have picked up the wrong date like many, actually the registry date rather than the true birth/death/marriage date.

It certainly makes sense to me to double check what I have. Lots of errors!
