I have half of a commemorative war certificate for my great-grandfather Paolo Sulfaro (1882-1918) who died in World War 2. It only has the day he died 19 Jan 1918 but not the place. He was born in Giardini, Sicily and according to my Uncle died while fighting in Durres, Albania. Is there any possible way I could verify this information about his death?
Thanks!

Re: WW1 Military Records
I can't help you with this Josie, but I have a related query.
My grandfather served in the Italian army and was wounded in WW1.
He was born in Egypt from Italian parents and was living in Egypt at the time the war broke out. He must have joined up from there.
Is there any registry in Italy from which his service records could be obtained?

The Italian Ministry of Defense has an online database of military casualties at:

There are a few Sulfaro's listed, but I did not see him. There is also an email address to see if they have any other info.

Military records are held by the state archive for the comune in which the person was born. Therefore, you can contact:Josie07M11 wrote:I have half of a commemorative war certificate for my great-grandfather Paolo Sulfaro (1882-1918) who died in World War 2. There are numerous threads on this board which discuss obtaining military records. One of them is here: http://italiangenealogy.tardio.com/Foru ... c/t=15162/

Yes thank you! I mistyped, it was meant to be WW1 like in the subject title. I'm fairly certain this is him. Thank you for your help!

Re: WW1 Military Records
Thank you Riccardo. It seems that on the certificate Jan 19th was not the day he died but just the day the military commemorated his death in the war. I have managed to talk to relatives who believe that he is the first Paolo listed there as his father was named Giuseppe.
