help with city in Italy

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

help with city in Italy

Post by Bac2man »

Hi all, I have been trying to find the city of my grandmother so I can get her birth certificate. Her name was Asunta Supino and all I really know for sure is that she came from southern Italy . I have found he immigration paper work from Ellis island and can not read it at all. I have posted a link and a attachment to this document. She is line #3 with a line drawn through it, I think because she was rejected and had to wait on Ellis island for awhile. Any guesses would be greatly appreciated!!!!

I hope if you click search the document will pull up Thanks again

Unfortunately, this site messes up links which contain the name "ancestry" within. Can you provide more detail about the sailing? Ship name, date of arrival, and so on.

The line drawn through does not mean that she was held at Ellis Island, but more likely that she did not sail at all on that ship. Many possible reasons, illness or simply arriving at the pier too late are a few. See http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/manifests/left/ for info.

Oftentimes you will find that the person sailed on a later voyage, typically within a few weeks to a few months time. Any chance that this is your Assunta? link to manifest

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 about Assunta Lucia Supino
Name: Assunta Lucia Supino
Arrival Date: 15 Jul 1929
Birth Year: abt 1887
Birth Location: Italy
Birth Location Other: piperno
Age: 42
Gender: Female
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Conte Biancamano

Travelling with daughters Imola and Idna and with sons Francesco and Raffaele. Children's surname is Lucia.

PS: In case you weren't aware - Italian women usually (but not always) traveled under their maiden name, so it is not unusual to see a listing as on this manifest. In point of fact, even today, Italian women do not change their legal name after marriage as is common in the US.

Paul,

On the second page of the 1913 manifest Carmine found, Assunta states she is joining her father Francesco in Jersey City.
