Tomasino family, trying to find where they immigrated from

Post by kat2412 »

I am having some success tracing my family back to the port they came into America, but can not find passenger lists with their names or anything that tells me where they immigrated from. I know they came in through New Orleans I am looking for Joe (Joseph?) Tomasino and/or his father, Anthony (Antonio?) Tomasino. Names may have changed slightly after they immigrated, but not sure. I believe they may have immigrated from somewhere in Sicily. I am trying to obtain citizenship and need to figure out where they are from so i can find birth, marriage, death certificates, etc. Thanks for the help!

Also, any advice on obtaining citizenship would be greatly welcomed

Welcome to the Forum!
Chances are that if they arrived before the late 1890's their last place of residence will not be on their ship manifest.
Do you have their other US records? Sometimes a military registrtaion will give an exact place of birth.
If you give us a few more names, approx birth dates and where they lived in the US we may be able to help.

Hi, really you providing very little infos, but maybe we can help you equally!
I found only 1 family matching with this key: father Antonio Tomasino and son Joe( Giuseppe Tomasino) settled in Louisiana around 1880s -1890s;
I found a Antonino Tomasino b. 1845 abt imm. in 1888 abt in New Orleans LA; in 1899 the family's members joined:
-Maria Tomasino nee Perricone wife
-Giacchino " son age 16 ( death 22 Jun 1916 Houston, TX)
-Filippo " son age 14 ( birth 22 Apr 1885)
-Giuseppe " son age 12 ( birth 6 Nov 1886)
joining at Antonino Tomasino(husband/father in Louisiana)
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0016

all coming from Bisacquino( Palermo, Sicily, IT)
previous, with Antonino Tomasino, in 1888???(who know the right imm. year...) immigrated also the oldest son, also Antonino (jr)first name ( b. 13 Dec 1877); this family after 1905 settled in Houston Ward 4, Harris, Texas: the surname is transcribed as Tomaino, but is TOMASINO:

Household Members: Name Age
Tony (Antonino) Tomaino 65 (b. 1845 IT imm 1888 ???)
Marie Tomaino 56 (b. 1854 IT imm 1899 )wife

Gevcem (Giacchino)Tomaino b. 1886 IT imm 1899 son

Joe (Giuseppe)Tomaino b. 1890 imm 1899 son
20
Tony( Antonino) Tomasino b. 1877 imm. 1888 ??? son
29
Rosa Tomasino daughter in law born in IT
26
Mary Tomasino grandaughter born in Louisiana
5
Franziska Tomasino ditto born in TX
4
Rosa Tomasino ditto

This is absolutely the correct family. I don't know how to thank you, but I am so grateful for this help. I have been looking through other posts, describing the long journey to citizenship. The next step for me is to start searching for records. I am not exactly sure what forms, records, etc I need to find, but I intend to call the Italian consulate in Houston tomorrow for answers.
-Giuseppe " son age 12 ( birth 6 Nov 1886) is my Great Grandfather. I have found this link, http://www.comune.bisacquino.pa.it/contatti.htm, would it be a smart idea to contact the clerk for birth/marriage/death certificates? What would be the best strategy for finding and requesting these documents? I know people have had difficulty obtaining them, are there common errors people make when trying to obtain these records that I should avoid? Thank you for your kindness and generosity helping me. I hope to have the chance to give back.

Hi no problem for to obtain the birth certificate of Giuseppe Tommasino*
(*2 "m* on the baptism act: baptized the 7 nov 1886 in San Giovanni Battista church of Bisacquino; parents: Antonino Tommasino and Maria Perricone; godmother; Francesca Perricone; godfather: Michele Di Chiara;
note: the wife of Antonino Tommasino jr was Rosalia aka Rose Di Chiara maiden name, they married in New Orleans in 1903;
baptism image of Giuseppe Tommasino:

http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/4994 ... masino.jpg
right page; red line; in latin)

because you can write the request sending a email to this email address:
bisdemografici @ libero.it ( NO SPACES please!)

or writing a regular mail a this address:
Servizi Demografici
Via Stazione, SNC
90032 Bisacquino (PA)
Italy

asking this birth certificate helpful for dual citizenship:

ESTRATTO ATTO DI NASCITA- Modello Plurilingue di: TOMMASINO Giuseppe nato a Bisacquino il 6/11/1886, figlio di Antonino e Perricone Maria
using this for letter in italian language:

http://www.circolocalabrese.org/resourc ... /index.asp

you must wait abt 30/45 days but I am sure that you will obtain it! You need only of this certificate from Italy; the other marriage and death of your Giuseppe are US certificates.
all the best,
suanj

susanj,

do you know..

if antonio tomasino, giuseppe's father, naturalized would giuseppe have been naturalized through his father since he came over when he was a child? If this is so, would it make me ineligible for dual citizenship? I am trying to find any records I can on antonio tomasino, giuseppe's father, but have only found this one:
https://www.familysearch.org/s/recordDe ... u8TUc%253D

where it spells the name tony tomaino. I am confused about the naturalization requirements.

thank you thank you thank you for your time.

what you found is the same 1910 census that I found, only that is transcribed differently by familysearch; Antonino sr in 1910 is naturalized, so maybe he naturalized with wife and children; Joe/Giuseppe in WWI draft reg. card resulting naturalized:
World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
about Joe Tomasino Name: Joe Tomasino
City: Houston
County: Harris
State: Texas
Birthplace: Italy
Birth Date: 6 Nov 1886
Race: Caucasian (White)
FHL Roll Number: 1953767
DraftBoard: 4

http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/9348/giuseppem.jpg

and because he was single at this time, when he married no transmited the italian citizenship at own children...
however maybe he declared the naturalization for some reason... by ship's manifest it are naturalization markings only abt the brother: Filippo( Philip) Tommasino:
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0016

for first thing it is necessary to know if Giuseppe really naturalized... in 1930 Joseph Tomasino is naturalized, so it are some discrepancy abt that...
1930 United States Federal Census
about Joseph Tomasino Name: Joseph Tomasino
Home in 1930: Houston, Harris, Texas

Estimated birth year: abt 1889

Michaedine Tomasino 1 8/12
Joseph Tomasino 7/12

http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/6324 ... pe1930.jpg

in 1920 census, Giuseppe give the naturalization year: 1917

1920 United States Federal Census
about Joseph Tomasino
Name: Joseph Tomasino
Home in 1920: Houston Ward 4, Harris, Texas
Age: 32
Estimated birth year: abt 1888

so, again, the better thing is to descover if he naturalized and when..

I found the same discrepancies in the census about Giuseppe's naturalization. Is Giuseppe automatically naturalized if his father was in 1888? I will need to research the USCIS for details regarding Giuseppe's actual naturalization. In the 1920 census it says Giuseppe naturalized and also the census for 1930 shows Giuseppe is naturalized. Does this mean I am not eligible to apply for dual citizenship?

Seeming that Antonino sr naturalized before of children; Because in 1917 naturalized Giuseppe; Antonino jr naturalized after 1930(in 1930 census resulting PA= Papers application) as a well Filippo... If the 1917 is the right nat. year of Giuseppe, I believe that you are no elegible for dual citizenship....
