Loverdi

Post by marefrist »

Hi, I'm trying to find any information on my grandfather's family. We don't know much. His names was Charles Russell Loverdi. His father Rosario came over to America in the very early 1900's from or around Palermo. He came through Ellis Island in NY as far as we know. Any information or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
MaryAnn

Hi MaryAnn,
If you could provide more info they may be located on a census,
which could help locate a manifest for Rosario, or naturalization date.
Where did they settle in the U.S.? Rosario's wife's name?
Did Charles have siblings? Can you provide any dates for birth, marriage or death?
Have you tried to locate any paperwork to discover more info?
You can send for birth, marriage and death cerificates. Social security
application, perhaps someone in the family has the obituary? Is it possible to interview other family members for clues?
To trace family in Italy the town of origin must be known.

In the 1930 census of Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA
ED 51-45, page 13 B

Loverdi, Russell, age 42, married at 30 (looks like it should be 20),
arrived in 1913 (??), born Italy

---------, Mary, age 37, married at 15, arrived in 1906, born Italy
---------, Joseph, age 18, born PA
---------, Charles, age 17, born PA
---------, Francis, age 14, born PA
---------, Angelo, age 11, born PA
---------, Fred, age 8, born PA
---------, Alfred, age 2

Finally just using the name "VERDI" found them in 1920:
1920 census of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA
ED 89, page 9B

La Verdi, Sam, age 32, arrived in 1905, born Italy
---------, Mary, age 27, arrived in 1905, born Italy
---------, Santina, age 10, born PA
---------, Joseph, age 7, born PA
---------, Charles, age 6, born PA
---------, Francis, age 4, born PA
---------, Angelo, age 1, born PA

In the SSDI it states:
Angelo born 8 Aug 1918, died Dec. 1983
Alfred born 9 July 1924, died 23 Jan 1992
Joseph, born 29 Jan 1912, died 11 July 1993
Charles born 17 April 1913, died Jan 1983

Having difficulty finding anything more as the name "Rosario" for the father has yet to appear.......

Essgee,

I think you've got it! RUSS and SAM/SAL are common Americanized versions for the name Rosario. Ross and Ray are other Americanized versions of Rosario too.

Maryann,
Can you confirm that your grandfather Charles Russell was born in the U.S.?

I think this is your Rosario

pg1
http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManif ... 0701%2ETIF

pg2
http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManif ... 0701%2ETIF

He left behind his father, Guiseppe and was going to his brother Calogero (Charles)in PA.

If Rosario followed Italian naming traditions, he would have named his first son Joseph(Guiseppe) and very probable his 2nd son is named after his brother Calogero (Charles). Just as it is on the census that Essgee located.

Hope this helps.

I believe your grandfather and mine were brothers. My grandfather was Joseph Loverdi and had the same siblings listed in the census info.
