Birthplace for Great-Grandfather Paolo Amato?

Post by Traveler7 »

Hi,

Brand new to this forum. I need help finding the birthplace for my great-grandfather Paolo Amato. His date of birth is April 3, 1881. We believe he is from the Reggio Calabria region. His last place of residence prior to his arrival in the USA was Motta San Giovanni. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the Forum!
We'll be happy to help you look.
Do you have his ship manifest, or any other US records?
We wouldn't want to duplicate your research.
Thank you, Valarie

If he was born in Montebello Ionico, you can write to his comune for his birth record:

Italian form letter generator with instructions:

I have the ship manifest which lists Motta San Giovanni as his last place of residence. His date of arrival to the US was March 1, 1905. He was on the ship "Citta di Torino" which sailed from Napoli.

A couple of months ago I sent for his birth certificate from Montebello Ionico through the agency myitalianfamily.com. The results came back negative. I was absolutely baffled as I have his naturalization papers and it lists Montebello Ionico as place of birth on two seperate pages. He became naturalized on March 23, 1927.

For reference...here is the 1905 manifest

Age 24, married, going to cousin Domenico Calabro in New York City (Vivian, W. Va. was crossed out). He is a baker from Motta S. Giovanni

I looked today for you, but:
There was not born a Paolo Amato in Montebello in the years 1880,81 and 82,
There was not born a Paolo Amato in Motta S.Giovanni in the years 1880,81 and 82,
There was not born a Paolo Amato in Reggio Calabria in 1881.
I am sorry, but at least it narrows your search.
