"My Luca and Salerno ancestors from Palermo"

Hello Everyone...

My name is Thomas Behler and I'm fairly new to this forum...and this is my first post.

I recently discovered the Atto della Solenne Promessa di Celebrare il Matrimonio for my great great grandparents Giacomo Luca and Rosalia Salerno. It is four pages long and I'm hoping it can help lead me to confirmation of an old family legend that says Giacomo was a tutor to the children of a king (but perhaps more likely, lesser royalty or a noble family) and that Rosalia was either the head chef or in charge of the royal kitchens.

The document shows Giacomo's profession as "servitore" (servant...this much I recognize). Three other people identified in the document (friends/witnesses?) are also "servitore", lending weight to their association with a nobel family. And my great grandfather Giuseppe was multilingual and a well educated and cultured man by all accounts.

Is there anyone out there that would be willing to do a full translation of this document, including the "offialeeze"? It would mean a great deal to me.

On 30 October 1849 at 1 PM, before (official's name is too hard to read) Senator and officer of the civil records of the town of Palermo, department of S. Agata,
appeared at this town hall
Giacomo Luca, 27, born in Palermo, district of Palermo, downhill or downriver (valle) of Palermo, servant, residing in Toledo/S'Oliva, son of deceased Giuseppe and of deceased Antonina Mavaro
AND
Rosalia Salerno, widow of Gaetano Pazzuto, 39, born in Palermo, residing in Toledo/S. Agata, daughter of deceased Caliedonio (sp?) and of deceased Giuseppa Vento.

Right side indicates that the canonical marriage took place on the 31 of October of the same year at Paroco Mxxx?

I have tried to read the whole act from top to bottom, and it comes out that:

1. The promise of marriage was signed at 1AM (una di notte). Maybe public officers worked long hours back then, or the deed had to be done in secret for some kind of reason.

2. The official who received the promise of marriage was no less than Duke Giulio Benso Della Verdura, who later became Mayor of Palermo and Senator of the Kingdom of Italy.

3. While the groom (Giacomo Luca, son of the late Giuseppe and of the late Antonina Mavaro) was 27 years old and single, the bride (Rosalia Salerno, daughter of the late Calcidonio and of the late Giuseppa Vento) was a 39 year old widow of a man named Gaetano Pizzuto.

4. The marriage took place the following day, October 31st, 1849.

I'm very grateful for the help I've received so far. I feel I'm very close to identifying the royal or noble/aristocratic family that my Palermo Luca/Salerno ancestors served. And now I've found the Atto di Nascite birth records for Giacomo and Rosalia's first two children, Antonina and Francesca Paola.

Antonina's record identifies Giacomo's occupation as something other than "servant", as he was on his marriage document. Curiously, a year and a half later, when Francesca Paola was born, he was a servant again.

Could someone examine these two documents and advise me what Giacomo's new occupation was when Antonina was born. Also, is there any clue as to who he was working for?

Hello everone i am new at this. but i was wondering if anyone could help me out with my last name. i am trying to find out what part of italy is my name from. i was reading online that my last name Pazzuto is from Naples. is this right? i would love to find out as much info as i can. thank you for reading..

Possibly the name was originally "Passuto?"

There are 3 listings for Passuto in the Italian Phone Book in the Vercelli Province... (Piemonte Region)
