I am so excited I found Marriage documents

I ordered microfilm from the Latter Day Saints Church in Salt Lake city Utah and they came to a local church this week. I've spend two days pouring over Births Deaths and Weddings for Spezzano Piccolo Calabria and at the very end of the film 1901-1910 was my grandparents' Marriage! I am so excited to find this! It brought me to tears when I first laid eyes on it

My father does not know anything about his father (Pietro DeCicco in the document below) and so I am asking for a close translation of the record.

I captured the image from the microfilm reader with my Olympus DSLR camera which allows for 12x magnification. The image is black and white so it loads quickly.

What you have here is the Pubblication of the Marriage Banns, not the actual marriage act. But it includes the same information
You will probably find the actual marriage record in 1911.

This publication is dated 22 December 1910 at 11:20 AM, at the town hall of Spezzano Piccolo.

Before the official, Raffaele Cinnanti, senior councillor to the mayor, officer of the vital records, appeared Francesco DeCicco, 56, (occupation looks like wool dealer), residing in this town, father of Pietro, 25, peasant farmer residing in this town and son of deceased Maria Porco, peasant farmer who resided in this town during her life;

and also appeared Ferdinando Antiero, 60, cotton spinner, residing in this town, father of Maria, 18, housewife residing in this town and daughter of Rosina Santoro, housewife residing in this town;

to request the publication of the marriage celebration of Pietro DeCicco and Maria Antiero, groom born in Spezzano Piccolo and, and bride born in Spezzano Piccolo. Bride is residing in Spezzano Piccolo and groom is in America.

The second image has the names of the witnesses to this act:
Francesco Peluso, 32, stone mason, and
Nicola Serafini, 40, peasant farmer

It also lists the documents that are included with this act:
Birth acts of the spouses (groom and bride)
A notarized(?) statement that the groom is in a foreign country (America) at this time.
Death act of Maria Porco - mother of the groom
Consent of bride's parents
Consent of groom's parents.

Right column of the document notes the dates of the publication (which must be posted three times on the door of the town hall to allow anyone who has objections to the marriage to come forth)...
First banns - Sunday, 25 December 1910
Second banns - Sunday, 1 January 1911
Third banns - 5 January 1911

Nice job T.on the translation
First the Italians do the Promise of marriage act then the Marriage Bann was posted at both city halls if they lived in different towns for all to see. The Ban was posted so that if one of the couple was promised to someone else or if a man got someone else pregnant the families could protest the marriage. Also gave the couple time to reconsider their choice because Italians are not supposed to get divorced. The Banns were posted usually 2 sundays and the following thursday before the marriage could take place

I have family from Pedace, Spezzano Piccolo, Celico.
There are other Comune's around Spezzano Piccolo that you may want to review the films.
I have Cinnante in my family too and they were from Celico and Pedace.

Hi everyone thanks for the help. I wasn't sure what the Marriage Banns were so the clarification certainly helps.

I am awaiting entry into the Cultural Ministry's site "Portale della Storia degli Italiani" - they have all the records from Cosenza during the 1800s available.

I can see that they have one Maria Porco b 1856 and one Maria Francesca Porco b 1862. Either could be my great grandmother. Her husband Francesco DeCicco was b 1857. It is likely he was married to Maria Francesca Porco. Unfortunately until I receive my password for registration on the site I can't see anything but the index without details.

I also see they have a recording for my grand grandfather Francesco De Cicco but again I am stopped by not being able to access the site yet.

I can only hope they will grant me permission to enter so I can look at the Civil recordings

I am very excited at all of these recent developments

As far as writing to the commune for records post 1910 I am holding off on that for a little while, I hope to work backwards first while I am still able to obtain these older records.

I have completed my entire family genealogy to date with the exception of my paternal Italian side. Imaging going back to the 1500s Bessarabia and Wales for other ancestors on both my maternal side as well as that of my husband's (a task of many years I can assure you) but to be stumped by my Italian heritage... and now to have the floodgates open wide!! It boggles the mind as this means more to me than any of my other "trees"

Thought I would share this:

It is a photo of Maria Autieri (she went by Marietta) and Pietro De Cicco my grandparents. They settled in Field British Columbia Canada where grandpa worked for the railway.

Although I have been going through records on the Portale della Storia (got a password sent after a few tries lol) I am still unable to find a birth record for Pietro. It's been like this all along. I was hoping I could find one but I sure haven't had any luck at all

The only Pietro De Cicco (born 1886 or thereabouts in the Province) I am finding lists parents Giuseppe and Maria Lecci. How is this possible?

Given that his marriage ban or announcement reads that his parents are Francesco DeCicco and Maria Porco (deceased)

Any ideas from anyone on where to go from here? Are there any other clues within this document?

My dad always said he thought his father to have a half brother...so perhaps Francesco above is not Pietro's natural father, and perhaps he was born outside of Cosenza, and raised by Francesco?

All input and ideas or clues are welcome.

Hi Tessa!

I am expecting the Commune Birth Death and Marriage microfilm records from 1873-1900 to arrive here very soon, so I will be able to look for myself. If Pietro is not there I will then write to see about adoption recordings so I can tell them I know he was not born in Spezzano Piccolo, or probably in Cosenza for that matter... I am not hopeful.

Okay here is one last clue I would beseech you to explore for me.

This is the Marriage ban (?) of Pietro's sister Michelina DeCicco and her betrothed Salvatore Perri.

Although the names look the same to me, father of the Bride Francesco DeCicco (and deceased mother of the Bride Maria Porco) I am hoping you may be able to scan their record to see if there is any other clues as to where these two DeCicco kids came from.

I am 90% certain Pietro and Michelina are not natural born children of Francesco DeCicco.

(P.S. also, I have some copies of 1910, 1909 and 1908 Matrimony Indices that others may find of interest from Spezzano Piccolo. Can you suggest where I might post them so others can see? I am sure they would like them as reference materials and would be happy to supply them)
