Translation for two Atto di Nascite birth documents

Post by tbehler »

I'm very grateful for the help I've received so far (Re: "My Luca and Salerno ancestors from Palermo"). I feel I'm very close to identifying the royal or noble/aristocratic family that my Palermo Luca/Salerno ancestors served. And now I've found the Atto di Nascite birth records for my great great grandparents Giacomo and Rosalia's first two children, Antonina and Francesca Paola.

Antonina's record identifies Giacomo's occupation as something other than "servant", as he was on his marriage document. Curiously, a year and a half later, when Francesca Paola was born, it appears he was back to being a servant again. Family legend has it that one was a royal chef or head of the kitchens and the other was tutor to the "king's" children.

Could someone examine these two documents and advise me what Giacomo's new occupation was when Antonina was born? Also, is there any clue as to who he was working for?

Finally, is there an address for their residence?

Thanks again!

To me it appears that his occupation in Antonina's record is cocchiere or coachman. The record doesn't tell you who he worked for.

Thank you Peg!

How fascinating this is becoming. I can just envision a large stately, ornate coach, drawn by splendid horses, as it slowly but inexorably conveys some noble or royal passengers to...a festive ball or an dinner party, perhaps; or perchance to an official (or even better...clandestine!) meeting for some mysterious but important business...

And my great great grandfather Giacomo sitting there with the reigns, perhaps privy to great secrets, but stoic and silent as he resolutely guides the steeds and their charge to the appointed rendevous...

Hmmmm. I hope you'll forgive me that little flight of fancy!

And still before me...who was the chef and who was the tutor? And who was the noble family?!?!

Thanks again!

You're welcome. It's kind of fun to let your imagination go wild. It's always the unanswered questions that keep us addicted to this genealogy quest.
