One of the problems with Lucca is to determine which one we are talking about-

I apologize for the duplication of records, had we initiated some dialogue, we may have been able to address the question at hand.

You are seeking Italian records, which requires knowing the exact town of origin as all records are held at the comune level, these would include birth, marriage and death records. They can be requested by mail, or if the town has been microfilmed, researched at your local family history center.

The key question here is are we talking about the town of Lucca or the Province of Lucca? Often you will see in US records the Province listed, example my grandparents are from Pesaro, which is the Province, the town or comune, is Talamello, in many records Pesaro was listed instead of Talamello....

We will wait for your confirmation before proceeding with further instructions....

one of their children's birth records lists Sanviti as their birth place. Other records, including the records from their passage to America list Lucca (I'm guessing that would be the town) as their birthplace. Please forgive my overall ignorance in these matters. How else would I know which it is or whether the Lucca in the records means the town or the province? There's no one left alive here to answer the question, sadly. Thank you for your wisdom and advice.

Based on what I found in records, I would presume Lucca the town, with SAN VITO being a frazioni of Lucca, (in US terms it would relate to a small village, but under the jurisdiction of a larger town)

To make sure we have correctly identified this information I'm going to ask that another member take a look as well.

I found it interesting that Francesco ran a grocery store with Joseph Santarlasci, who was a butcher. Perhaps a brother or cousin? A few years younger than Francesco, immigration around 1890.

no doubts that Francesco Santarlasci was born in Lucca ( San Vito hamlet) and that when the brother, Giuseppe left the Italy, the last residence was SS. Annunziata, hamlet of Lucca also, because surely the family moved from a hamlet to another, but the birthtown is Lucca, because the hamlets are no Communes:
