Hi, I just joined Italian Geneology, and I hope I'm in the right place to find out which ship my grandmother and aunt came over on in March of 1937. They left Rome on either the Rex or Conte di Savoie. Their last name is Gallo or Folinogallo, Maria and Caterina. Thanks so much!

Can you give us some idea as to the year of birth for Caterina and Maria?
Was either of them married at the time they emigrated? If so, what was the married name?

OK - I think this is a good possibility...
However the ship is the SS Roma, not the Rex
Arriving March 1937 in NY
Maria Romana Crocce (Gallo) age 33
Daughter Caterina Gallo age 7 (US citizen)
Leaving father/grandfather Saverio in Falerna
Going to husband/father Pietro Folino Gallo @ 2025 Thurston St., Pittsburgh
Lines 17 and 18

To clarify, my grandmother, Maria, was born in 1904. She would have been about 30, and my aunt Caterina was born in 1930, so she would have been 6. They left Rome and came to Ellis Island in March 1937. Their last name is Gallo, but my aunt thinks that when they lived in Italy, their last name may have been Folinogallo. She thinks it was shortened when they arrived in New York.
Re: New Member on this Site
I think the last manifest I posted with images is the correct one...
Ships sailed from Genoa, Naples and Palermo, when leaving Italy.

Tessa, yes, that is it! Thank you so very much.
This site is very confusing to me! I guess I didn't see it at first.

Gret find, Tess!
To clarify, Maria's maiden name appears to be Crocce. Italian women mostly appeard on manifests using their maiden names unless they were traveling with their husband.
Notice also that Caterina Gallo is listed as a US citizen. It is possible that she had never before been in the US; however if her father was a naturalized citizen, all of his minor children would have earned US citizenship at the same time so long as they entered the US prior to the age of majority.
Automatic citizenship for spouses ended in 1920-something, so Maria is still an Italian citizen. If someone in this family (you, perhaps?) was interested in jure sanguinis citizenship, you would be able to do so only through Maria, only through her children born on or after January 1, 1948, and only on the assumption that Maria did not herself become a naturalized US citizen prior to those births.

Re: New Member on this Site
I wondered why my aunt was listed as a U.S. Citizen. My grandfather had come to Pittsburgh several years prior to my grandmother and aunt. My grandmother did become a U.S. citizen. She passed away in 1998 at the age of 94.
