Different spellings for surnames

Post by mikie19642000 »

Is there a different way to spell Pinelli ? This is the way that we have always spelled it but I wonder if it could actually be different. Maybe Panelli, Punelli, Paneli ?
I want to find the immigration papers for my Great Grandparents and my Grandmother.

Mike,

You can test various spellings using the Italian white pages telephone directory: http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi ... i&dv=&l=en

Take a look here, as well: http://www.cognomiitaliani.org/cognomi/cognomi0014.htm

If you would care to share additional info (names, year of birth, place settled in the US, etc), we would be happy to see what we can turn up.

I have no idea when they immigrated but I do know it was before 1924 because several of their 13 children were born in the US.
Great Grandfather is Mateo Pinelli
Great Grandmother is Rina Cardinale Pinelli
Mateos brother lived here as a fishmonger before the rest of the family came... They all lived in Buffalo New York but I'm not sure if this was their original city.
There were 2 of Rinas sisters...Sesunda and Secunda Cardinale...not sure of the spelling.
They opened a business in Buffalo...Is there a way to find that out too?

Do you have an approx year of birth for Mateo?

Names of his children (at least some of the 13) would help to find a census record...

Names of his brothers, if you know them?

Another Buffalo Directory - 1956

Third column - Top - 3rd listing

Matthew Pinelli, wife Rena, painter, 409 Busti Av.

If Matteo (Matthew) was still living in 1956, there is a good chance you can learn the names of his parents and his place of birth from his Social Security Application...

You can usually find the SS# on his death cert., or you can request a search.
Order a copy of his application (SS-5) at this site online...

Here is 1927 Directory with an address of "418 Chicago"
This might help with a search for the 1930 Census...
Name still listed as Matteo...

Matteo's occupation is paperhanger. They live on Myrtle Avenue.
Matteo's year of immigration is listed as 1920 (also listed as Naturalized), and Rena and Rose as 1920.
Rose seems to be the only child listed in 1930 as born in Italy...
