excuse my subject heading, but I was wondering. I received a letter from Marsiconuovo awhile back, it is just a letter stating when my ggf was born. It also list his marriage date March 22 1887, to Rosa Sangiorgio. Well just recently looking through all my papers it hit me, duh. That my grandfather was born in 1881 and his sister in 1878. My question is did people in Italy live together before marriage or could this year of 1887 be a mistake. They list it on the letter as ANNOTAZIONE RELATIVA A MATRIMONIO, ATTO N 17.

I suggest reading Tafford Coles's book "Italian Genealogical Records" on this subject. To summarize, the Italian Government required a civil marriage ceremony. There have been periods of time where couples would marry in the church and not have a civil ceremony. Ususally both were done. If only married in the church the government did not recognize the marriage and the children from the marriage were considered illegitamate. Sometimes it was years between the chuch and civil ceremony. Perhaps, this is what has happened in your case. AGain, this is a very brief summary of what he writes.

thank you so much.. I think that sounds about right..When my grandparents married here in the United States we found that they married in civil ceremony 2 months before the date we always thought of as their anniversary, which was a church wedding.
