Understanding the Curatolas

Post by ibeirish »

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone could help me find some info on my relatives:
Guiseppi "Joseph" Sebastino Curatola was born 2 Jun 1903 in New York, NY.
He died in Oakdale, Suffolk, NY on 19 May 1983.

His parents, Vincenzo "James" Curatola and Philomena Caputo traveled back and forth from their residency in NY to their residency in Fiumefreddo Bruzio, Cosenza, Calabria, Italy. Vincenzo died on 20 March 1943 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York. No known information on Philomena.

Vincenzo and Philomena had 8 children (the only one aside from Joseph that I know is Michele):
-Antonio
-Carolina
-Dominico
-Frances
-Frank
-Rosina
-Guiseppi "Joseph" Sebastino 1903-1983)
-Michele (1907-1995)

Guissepi was married to Mary Lena Cangialosi (unsure when they were married, I would like to find out :D ). She was born 4 Nov 1910 in New York, NY, and died in Freeport, Nassau, NY on 12 Mar 1998.

The couple had 2 children:
Cynthia (b. 1939) and Phyllis (b. 1945)

Now there is a fact that I have recently learned about one of the children, Mary (who happens to be my great-grandmother). She was married once before Joseph to a man named Francesco "Frank" LoMonaco at the old St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City, and had three children: Frances (b. 1928), Sarah (b. 1930), and Andrew (b. 1937). When Joseph and Mary got married, a couple of years later all the children were "adopted" so they all had the same last name- Curatola.

I would like to find out more about Mary and Joseph's union (like where and when they were married), as well as anything else that anyone can find about the Curatola family in general - I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks so much!,
Ashley

Oh my God thank you for finding this out!!!! I have just requested a certificate for their marriage, so that's good that someone else found the same one. As for the 1930 census, I never really thought of spelling their name that way. What gives me the hunch that it's them is that Frank was a plasterer, and their daughter Frances is about 2 at the time the census was being taken. Is there a way to find out if Mary and Frank were still together in 1940?

OH MY GOD!!! There's a Curatola if you scroll down, and it's Vincenzo "James" Curatola (Joseph's father)!!! And on the next page is Michele! Ok I'm officially freaked out now. But my question is- where's Joseph? I can't find him in any 1930 census. Would you be able to find something for me Laura? Thank you again!

No known information on Philomena.
Have you noticed that on this 1926 arrival manifest for Vincenzo Curatola he stated that his wife Filomena Caputo was in Fiumefreddo? Vincenzo stated that he had been in U.S. from 1900 to 1920 and that he was going to join his son Domenico living on 1055 Flushing avenue, Brooklyn.... maybe the rest of the family was in Italy?

This is a 1933 arrival manifest for Vincenzo and he is listed as a widower, so possibly Filomena died in Italy...
He stated that he was leaving in Fiumefreddo his daughter Carolina and was joining his son Domenico living in Brooklyn

You know something, I knew that they were living in Fiumefreddo and had a hunch that Vincenzo came back in order for him to be on the 1930 census with his son Michele. But I wonder where did Domenico go? Also, can you make out what is written on top of the residency of the 1933 arrival manifest? I think it says mike, joe, domenico, and something else.

Thank you for finding these for me. I just gotta figure out where and how Joseph fits in all this. As far as I've searched, there's like no record of him here (aside from his naturalization papers), it's like he was kept a secret. Would you happen to know how to search for him, in terms of finding out if he worked or where he was living?

Ashely, have you already seen this passport application for Joseph?

On 12 august 1922 Joseph Curatola (born in NY on 2 june 1903) asked to the Italian Consulate of Messina an american passport to let him return to the US to establish his permanent residence there...
He stated that he lived in NY from his birth since 23 november 1920 when he left to go to Italy, and arrived in Fiumefreddo on 8 december 1920 where he was actually living with his father and mother.

Oh wow thank you Laura! I have seen the passports for Michele and Vincenzo, and found their pictures, which is amazing to see. I've never seen a 1910 census for the family before, and no wonder I couldn't find one because their name was spelt wrong lol. From the Italian site, is that a birth announcement of some sort for Antonio? Would they have something on Filomena and Vincenzo's wedding or her death? Wow, I didn't know Antonio was drafted (I didn't know any of the Curatolas, not even my great grandfather Guiseppe). I wonder if Guiseppe had a WWI draft card as well.

Hey everyone, been a while since I posted something on here. I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me in finding out when my great grandmother Mary Cangialosi LoMonaco married her second husband Guiseppe "Joseph" Curatola? I have narrowed down the years to be between 1942 and 1945, but I'm not sure as to when they were married. Can anyone help me in this? Thanks!!

I can but I'm not a living grandparent, so I guess I can't.
