Zenni as a 1st name

Post by rwelgin1 »

Has anyone ever came across the name Zeni, Zenni or Zennius as a 1st name for any of their Italian ancestors?
I have gotten back to the mid-16th century and my subjects fathers name is spelled a few different ways. Zeni, Zenni, Zeno, Zenus and also Zennius and I was wondering if it was a common name for that time. This ancestor also named one of this sons Zenni.

I was just curious. A new name to me.

There are some variants of Zenni listed here at the Nomi Italiani site, http://www.nomix.it/700wz.php

Zena
Zenaide
Zenebio
Zeno
Zenobio
Zenone

I believe most of these are Greek in origin.

His last name was Bazzanella and the family was from Sover, Trento, Italy.
Thank you for the replies. I could not find anything on the name or variations.

I see the Bazzanella's are still centered in the Trento area: http://www.gens.labo.net/en/cognomi/gen ... Bazzanella

And, in fact, there are 32 of them listed in Sover today: http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi ... &om=0&be=0.

Thanks again-

I just had another brief quick question.
What is the significance of surnames with endings of -i, -o or -a?
I had heard once that mostly northern Italians took the -i and southern Italians took the -o. Where do the -a come in at?

Thank you,
Rick

Fantastic! Thank you...
I actually saw this in my own Italian family in one of their notations, within 2 generations.
The surname started off as Lona, I assume they were from Lona, Trento at one time. They moved to Giovo, Trento and they added da in front of the name as in from Lona. The name evolved from Lona to da Lona then DaLona to Dallona, which is the spelling my gr-great grandmother used.
Very interesting....Thanks again,
Rick
